No screen display - problems trying to recover files

Hi, I'm trying to recover pictures from a Samsung S8. The screen is broken and there is no display, the glass is shattered - it is completely black.

I have tried to use the Samsung 300K Tool however when the phone is plugged into my Windows pc (Windows 7), and the 300K Tool recognises the connection;

I click on the 'resistance' and it shows me that the phone is 'Samsung Mobile USB Modem' and that "Phone is in download mode now"

If I go to the Device Manager on my pc, it shows the USB Modem location as Port_#0008.Hub_#0004.
And if I navigate under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I have a listing for 'SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device.

I know that the drivers are up to date and I have tried disabling the modem in Device Manager.

I am assuming that the phone is acting as a modem and that this is why I cannot access the phone as a storage device to retrieve the folders and files.
The phone doesn't show up under Computer where the drives are displayed at all, and I am not getting the dialogue box to explore the phone's files when I plug it in.

Can anybody help me please? I've tried to find an answer online but because I have no screen display, I can't access the phone's settings to disable the modem from the phone.

I'm not 100% sure how to use Odin to enable usb debugging and even if I could enable the usb debugging, using Odin, is that going to solve the issue of not being able to access the file system because of the phone acting as a modem?
I'm actually not very familiar with the process of extracting data from a broken phone, other than I have managed to successfully do it once before in a very similar situation with no screen access and used Fonelab for Android but the software doesn't have a drop down listing for the Samsung S8 so the software is useless. I'm doing this for a friend.

Was the phone PIN or pattern locked? Because if it is, you will not be able to retrieve data from it with a computer, until it's unlocked somehow, like getting the screen repaired so it can be unlocked. .

Problem is that I can't view anything on the screen, so I'm not sure if this method would even help.

 
I will have to ask my friend as it was his phone. I'm assuming if he was using Google photos that they would be backed up or synced on Google though wouldn't they? If that is the case, maybe that could save me a lot of messing around trying to get into the files on his phone.
 
Thanks Hadron. I'm hoping so. The first time I did this with my own phone that was damaged, it was a Samsung S4 - that was a lot easier to extract the data from. :D
 
Dannydet, My friend said that he had used Google photos but when he went to access Google photos, it had only synced with photos up to a certain point and there are a couple of months worth of photos still on his phone that he couldn't find on Google photos.
 
ok, fair enough. Apparently he did use the phone as a wifi hotspot for his laptop. I'm thinking that this is why it is coming up as a modem device on my pc. I need to find a way to have it show up on my pc so that I can access and transfer files. Any ideas? Anyone?

Linux.

It's been years since I used a cable to manually connect a phone to any of my computers (which are Linux only), but back then I don't recall any problems accessing files.

Your phone is Linux (Android), so hooking it up to a computer that's also Linux should yield good results.

No guarantees, though, because there are so many unknown variables concerning the phone.
