no sd card detected?

Please be patient with me, I am new to 'forums' and I am still learning the ins and outs to my phone,
Last week I went to take a photo at my daughters Christmas concert and my phone said 'memory full' which I thought was odd, (only have two-three hundred photos and videos) plus I don't save things to my phone and I only have four extra apps, So I attempted to go into my gallery to delete a few photos thinking it would be the same as clearing a memory card from a camera and in my gallery a message came up 'no SD card detected' and above that message another that says 'no items' NOW i can't find my photos at all...its overly frustrating and confusing...

I looked all over google and could not find another person with this issue.
I took the battery out, and tried to view my photos from the 'files' folder but NOTHING
...
phone storage says in both external and internal sd card info,
total space -unavailable
available space- unavailable

and in my phone internal storage it says 1.67gb

The phone is a samsung galaxy S and it is officially a year old. I thought this phone was powerful so I do not understand the issues i am having?

Can someone help if they know? I am trying to avoid calling my service provider because their tech support is a joke.

Card was not being detected, so certain apps stopped working correctly.
(SwiftKeyX could not auto-correct, Dropbox can't open docs, etc)

I just removed the microSD card, and plugged it back in.
No reset or anything needed.

Note, this was NOT the "paper" SIM card under the battery,
but the tiny micro SD card that pops out of the side.
