No search icon in my stock email app

I love my Moto X (original version), but there's one thing I haven't been able to figure out how to do. I use the stock email app for my work email and the GMail app for my gmail account. While using the GMail app, I have the ability to search, but I do not when using the stock email app. Meaning, there is no magnifying glass/search icon in the top bar, or anywhere else that I can find. Someone suggested that I create an new account for my work email in the GMail app, which I just did. I was successful at getting all my work mail to show up in the new account, but alas, when I switch back and forth between the two accounts, the search feature goes away when I switch to the work account I just created. I've done some more research, and just found a screen grab someone posted on TechHive in an article about Kit Kat changes to the stock email app, and it clearly shows a search icon in the top bar. However, now that I look closer at the screen grab, the person is using their gmail account in the example. Maybe searching in email is only available on gmail accounts, regardless of which email app is used? Does anyone know if that's the case? Or is there something flakey about my stock email app? FWIW, I'm running 4.4.4, and GoDaddy provides our service.

Hi Dan, Welcome to Android Forums! :)

I can't speak to the stock email app because I don't use it. I'm running lollipop (Android 5.0.1) on my Nexus 6 and the stock email app is gone, with additional account support built right into the gmail app. I also have my email accounts setup in gmail on my Galaxy Note 10.1 running KitKat 4.4.2.

As for the gmail app, I have three additional email accounts (IMAP) as well as my primary gmail account and all of them show the search option. I did notice that if you expand the side menu, the search option disappears, but it comes back as soon as you close it.

You might want to make sure you have the latest version of the gmail app.

Mmmm... I'm not seeing that on my HTC One running 4.4.3 with Gmail version 5.0.1 (16th December).

There is search function on all my Gmail accounts but not on non-Gmail accounts, nor is there the option to archive non-gmail mail, which I've assumed is because the mail appears only on the home server.

Is it Android version related?

As a matter of interest my stock mail app does have the search function.
 
Hmmm...I admit don't actually use the Gmail app, I use AquaMail. So only our Gmail accounts are setup in the Gmail app. I just assumed search would be there for all accounts in the Gmail app.

Oops...my mistake, I shouldn't assume this stuff. That sucks. Search should be available for all accounts.

Actually you are right up to the last update. The current version added a great deal more support and now all accounts behave pretty mucht he same ... except gmail is the only account that will push.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought.

I'm puzzled no longer - I've got IMAP and POP accounts in Gmail 5.0.1 but have only actually used the POP accounts which don't have the search facility. Having just checked the IMAP accounts (because lunatic referred only to IMAP) they do indeed have it.

However neither POP nor IMAP have the archive facility, which, depending on your particular requirements makes the original and still available option of using Gmail to 'fetch' other mail preferable. The mail appears in the Gmail inbox and both search and archive are available.

The limitation is five other mail accounts per Gmail account.
