First make sure you have a Notification sound selected under Settings > Sound. If this is fine you will need to check your messaging app. Most messaging apps allow you to select a different notification sound than what is selected under system settings.
Open your messaging app and hit your phones menu button (You may have to back out of a conversation to the conversation list to get menu). Select setting and look for Notification. Check to see if Notifications are turned off within the app or if you need to select a notification sound.
