I"m hoping you have not rooted and removed certain system-needed apps. That can cause many issues, one such as you're describing.
But other things can cause the sms and phone to stop working, such as the SIM card becoming damp or corrupted in some other way. I'd remove it after a shut down, along with the sd card and battery, and examine those areas where they reside for moisture and/or dirt. Use rubbing alcohol if you see something; it evaporates quickly and is used by techs to clean these things.
You may need to visit your carrier/provider for a replacement SIM card. Or, just the removal and cleaning of the little ports where the sd and SIM cards go could be enough.
All of the above is assuming you have a valid data agreement with your provider/carrier or a pay as you go thing that is not expired. And that you're in an area with a good signal.
