Even if you live in Detroit, Dallas, etc..EVERY SINGLE MARKET has Ev-Do towers & 1rXX towers, but they are all capped at 1x speeds. If you have a 3G logo, it just means your close to a Ev-Do tower...but your speeds won't be any faster..just looks cooler lol
I only know this, because I work for metro lol

in a way you are right, but also wrong.
1x max speed is 170k, but usually less than that in real life -- say 100k? A lot of people say Metro's 1x is often 50k, 60k.
Whereas, "3G" CDMA minimum speed (according to revised CDMA specs in 2005) is
300k. That's MINIMUM before it can be called 3G.
(I know back in 1997, 1x was called "3G technology" but in 2005 the same standards body said 300k was minimum 3G speed which effectively demoted 1x from 3G land. Basically by stating that minimum speed, they said EVDO was 3G but 1x was not, as 1x maxes out at 170k even in ideal conditions.)
So, you are right that unless Metro caps the EVDO at 300k or MORE, then it's not true "3G" -- even if your phone has a 3G symbol showing.
In most markets, Metro is capping at 200k -- which is does not qualify at 3G speed. BUT in some markets, Metro is allowing higher EVDO speeds. So, it depends where you live.
But, also remember that Metro has said only 20% of cell sites in each market will get EVDO. They are not going to convert all sites to EVDO. The future is LTE.
