Nonformatting SD card

I got a new Sandisk 32 GB SD card. The Coolpad Canvas said it was corrupt. Then it gave a choice of 2 ways to format it. I went with the normal portable one. It immediately claimed 20 percent but it's never climbed higher. What's the problem?

Try in formatting that SD Card from within the phone option on settings..then when is done, take it off, then physically mount it on your pc and format it again from it..that should clear the error your SD Card is experiencing..

Let me know.

^^^This

I was going to suggest doing the other way ... PC first then in your phone, but it should work. Remember to format as Fat32.

Could it be the phone? I just bought it Friday, seemingly mint in package. I set it up as far as I could on Wi-Fi just to test it. Firefox was slow but it might have been a bad connection. Then it showed a website I hadn't requested, in triplicate. Finally I decided to charge it and ITS OWN CHARGER WOULD NOT FIT IN THE CHARGE PORT. I am not kidding. I tried at least 2 others with it and even got another, but it was the same problem with all of them. At last I opened the phone just in case I had somehow put it back together wrong and that might be blocking it, but no dice. It could be that I just got a lemon, but I'm glad I have the receipt and all the packaging. I am returning this piece of junk. On the off chance that it was just a fluke, I plan to check out another Coolpad Canvas IN THE STORE to find out if its charger fits. Otherwise they owe me $53.81 because I am keeping the SD card.

Well I plugged the phone into the PC but it doesn't show the SD card at all. I don't know how to format it if I can't find it.

Do you have a card reader so you can mount the card directly on your PC? I can think of only three possibilities.

  1. The card is bad.
  2. The cable is bad.
  3. The USB port on the phone is bad.
  4. The SD card slot on the phone is bad.

Wait ... that's 4. Well, math was never my strong suit. (Right @rootabaga ? :p)

I don't know about a card reader, but I do have a sort of converter/holder that fits in a slot on the front of the PC, as Hadron kindly noted. I used that combo with the other SD card, but that was already formatted and had numerous pictures and videos. If I "convert" it to fit in the slot, would I then be able to format it as FAT32? Would it be safe to power off the phone, remove the cover, take out the card, and do that? If I reboot the phone, it shows the "corrupt" message and offers to format, but it instantly reads 20% and doesn't change after that, except to disappear.

Your 'converter' looks something like this?

or possibly this?

Then yes, turn off the phone, take out the SD card and put it in your converter (card reader) and then put it in your PC. It should pop-up as either an unrecognized device or not formatted. Either way, format using Fat32 and I'd recommend doing a full format, not just a quick format.

If that completes successfully, then create two folders, one called "pictures" and one called "music" and then in the pictures folder copy a random picture and in the music folder copy an mp3. Then, put it back in your phone, boot it up and see what happens.

If you've lived a good, clean life then it will see the card and you can play the music and view the picture.

It's not exactly that kind. It's more of a flat little plastic "envelope" with gold contacts. I put the SD card in that and then insert the whole shebang into the slot on the front.

The card is brand new, or at least supposed to be. It was seemingly securely packaged and did not look suspicious. I hope it's a SanDisk 32 GB.

I tried to download it, but it's apparently incompatible. I read it might have something to do with 7.0. Is Google deliberately trying to make people unable to check on their own SD cards, and why would they do that? Is there a workaround or maybe some other app?

Hi, I went to the website but I guess it didn't have a Windows version. Is there something similar to SD Insight that would be available for Windows 8.1? I just want to find out if it's OK, format it if it is, and be done with it.

Well, I guess I got the PC version of SD Insight, but then it wanted to know what to use to open it. How would I know? I went to the Windows store and maybe the best thing there for that was some kenteken thing. I think maybe it wasn't up to it because it showed some kind of label, white on dark blue. The only word I could read on it was close. Are there any Dutch speakers on Android Forums?
