Root noob question about rooting

hi
an early christmas gift is landing a nexus 5 for me in couple of weeks :D
which i want to activate on Metropcs. i'll root it too (just to have access to system). i'll use 'CF-autoroot' . last three weeks i have read countless threads here and xda forums and fairly certain i'll be ok. except one question.
do i activate on Metropcs and then root? or i take the phone out of the box, root it then activate?
because according to what i read, unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone. so if i activate first then root, do i have to re-activate? also do i have to take the sim card out of the phone before rooting?
thanks.

Rooting doesn't affect your SIM or your phone service. You get a factory reset when you unlock the bootloader, but it doesn't affect the partition with your phone information. I always set up phoneservice first as part of making sure the phone works the way it is supposed to, checking for potential warranty issues before I root. Old habits, since it is now so easy to unroot and relock Nexus phones that warranty isn't a big consideration. ;)

This is what I did. Out of the box I went through the steps to get my phone set up, activated my phone, unlocked the bootloader (which wiped everything) but really didn't wipe anything cause I didn't fully set up my phone, then rooted it:D

Edit: Once you unlock bootloader you don't have to reactivate it. It has nothing to do with that same goes for the Sim card
