Root Noob with questions

scrypt

Lurker
Forgive my ignorance of your Android lexicon and please treat me in this thread as a simpleton.

I purchased a Galaxy Indulge, and being quite dissatisfied with the standard of included software, I proceeded to, as I understood it, root the phone; according to a thread however, what I did was not a true root and was referred to as a level 1 or 2 or what have you.. I was able to delete some bloatware but I am unable to delete several other unnecessary programs such as Accuweater.

As it sits now, I am able to terminate the processes but within minutes they restart.

I have long lost the original thread, so I will attempt to explain, to the best of my ability, the process that I followed so you can be more able to aid in my quest obtain a product as it should have left the factory...

1)Following directions from the thread, I connected usb to pc and ran supplied program which prompted to install "Superuser"; it then prompted to remove given bloatware programs.

2) I then went into settings>running services, and disabled all but swype; then to manage applications>running and cleared and stopped a few.

I assumed this would be all that was required, however under manage applications>all there are several apps wasting space (accnt sync, accuweather, allshare, live wallpaper, etc, etc)

When I run the Task Manager, no matter how many times I clear the memory, applications will start without my access or authorization; without opening any programs, menus, making calls or texts; they runs regardless.

All I really needed a phone for was making calls, multimedia messaging, rarely internet browsing, and on occasion a game of chess. I dont need sync, I dont need bluetooth; I dont need email.

Without any use, the battery is dead within 6 hours from fully charged. This is not acceptable by any standard, if I had known, I would not have purchased.

Please help me turn this paperweight into a decent consumer electronic:(

Task Manager>Active applications

"Active applications: 0"

Task Manager>RAM manager

Level 2 Clear memory>"13 applications closed"

If none were running, how did it stop 13?!?!?!?! AAAAHHHHHHHH

You have a good idea but it doesn't apply with Android.

Unlike other systems, the killed tasks are probably not really running.

Many Android apps start up and then hibernate, using no battery. They're standing by, ready to run more quickly if you do need them.

Task killers just remove them and then waste power while the system gets them back to the ready state. In other words, despite being popular, task killers lie.

What you might want to do instead is put a power control widget on one of your screens, go into settings and turn off background data and account syncing and just turn on your various radios when you need them. That will save power. So will uninstalling the task killer and not using it.

If your phone didn't include a power control widget, there are several for free in the Play Store, here's one -

If that doesn't work, let me know, I'll tell you about various monitoring apps you can try to fix things if the trouble keeps up.

Welcome to the forums! :)

I had sync turned off, but not background data.

I understand now the sleeping programs are not actually running(cpu), but they are loaded into the RAM, no?

I just think its ridiculous that I cannot delete programs I will never use. Metro signed a contract with Samsung, I did not; I purchased this product, therefor I should be able to modify it anyway I wish as long as I am not profiting off the resale of an existing patent. /rant

After leaving it be w/o killing tasks all day, I went back into running services and sync was running even though I had disabled it long ago.

Is there no way to just delete all this garbage? I have intention of putting up with these unnecessary services/applications =(

Apps not running are very often not in ram at all, they get parked in the operating system cache on internal storage with a very short pointer to them in ram.

You can root your phone and freeze or remove bloatware. You can't freeze or remove whatever you may think without often causing the system to fail. Nothing personal, just an honest warning. Your best bet is to find a rom that's already been debloated by a dev who knows their stuff. If there are any for your phone, they ought to be listed in our root forum here.

Before doing that, I would recommend using GSAM Battery Monitor and look at proper stats. It's free and works great. Look for things that are waking or keeping your phone alive. When your screen is off, your phone should sleep and draw hardly any power.

These articles are good background information about Android process management -

Real world tests show task killers still don

Thank you for the links.

The apps are loading into the ram using as much as 80% of it, when I kill them, ram usage drops to 25%. So far everything I've killed has not interfered with the operation of the phone in anyway.

Power consumption isn't driven by ram use, it's driven by cpu use. ;)

Try GSAM Battery Monitor to see where your power is really going. Install it, start it, reboot your phone, kill nothing, use it a while.

Many apps and tools give useless data, not GSAM.

Tap the vacuum in the lower left, then tap the top bar on the next screen to see various views.

That's it, I'm tossing this POS into the trash; where it belongs.

While I understand the points made above, the continuing issue was not resolved in any sense whatsoever.

I understand linux just fine.. I understand that if I, as root user, do not specifically authorize a task, it will not run; in this case how ever, even though I specifically deny a task, they run regardless..

The case was made that by loading the apps into cache, it saves battery by not having to completely load the code each time I run the app; however, none of the "apps" that I've "disabled" are required for the phone to have full service; absolutely no errors, no loss of any functionality at all!

I own this phone. I am not renting this phone. I am admin. Samsung is not admin... MetroPCS is not admin. I have no interest in what apps they think I will use and therefor force to run.. I know, plain as day, that WeatherBUG has no purpose on MY phone.

This IS NOT Linux... this is a shill. I will NEVER buy another android again.

Flashing Basix and disabling 4G when you know your not using it greatly help. Also the Motion is nice, a few little issues mainly bootloader, and kernel related, but all together a great little phone I get a full day on a charge 2 if I disable 4G. Android can be a beautiful thing, Samsung screwed this little guy up with all their "security measures" (kinda in the way LG did the motion). I have an Acer Iconia A500 best thing I've ever bought, simply love it, It's seen almost 2 years, 30+ roms 150+ revisions, 3 day battery life to this day. Don't let Samsung ruin your experience, Android in it's pure form is a very formidable contender in the phone and tablet world for a reason, remember not all Androids are born equally.
