Noobie here

Hi, noob here. New to smartphones and android format. This site popped up a few times while doing searches on phones etc so figured I better join and do some reading.
From US but living/working in Europe for the past year, mostly in Italy but travel to most of the local countries for work/play, expect to be here another year or so, we'll see. Don't need the phone side much, but definitely need the internet functions for travel access, road closures in the Alps, last minute hotels on the road etc.
After doing some research on CNet, here and a few other places, then checking with what Vodafone was offering I quickly realized that things are probably running about six months behind what they are in the states. I think I only saw one phone with ICS, outrageously priced. Not to mention not being able to communicate well with the reps at the stores because I only know very basic Italian, lol. Opted for a mid range phone to start with and learn, but at EU prices thats still pretty expensive.
Yesterday ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy S Plus, as it seems to have all the needed frequencies to travel with. Already ordered a few new batteries, a 64gb sd card, etc etc from eBay. The newer S2 version here, even at $250 more, didn't have the 1900Mhz, only 850, 900, and 2100. Also went with the prepaid Vodafone service, 250M/wk.
Now I just need to figure out how to use the thing, learn the new terminology, and set it up. And oh yea, I'm the odd guy out, everybody I work with is on iPhones, so they're no help.
ps: A new 64gb iPhone here is like 899E, (over $1200)

Hello and welcome to Android Forums! :)

Just curious, which carriers use the 1900 MHz bands in the EU, or are you planning on bringing it to the states to use with AT&T?

Yup, some FAQ I read while doing research said 1900 was 3G in the states, and I've got an AT&T account on hold (so I can keep my number) while I'm here in EU. This way I've got my bases covered. I do travel, a lot, more than I want to sometimes, a lot, lol.

1900 MHz is AT&T while 1700 MHz is T-Mobile. The other two carriers are Verizon and Sprint but they are CDMA networks.
