Not a fan of the lock screen

Lock screen clock? Always-on-display clock? Homescreen widget clock? Notification bar clock?

Not sure what clock you mean and what you hate about it. Have you tried to change it? Is it possible to change it? Can you disable it?
Is this an issue with the Note 8's clock with other folks?

Going on very little info in your OP makes it a tad difficult to diagnose or help ;)

Lock screen. It's hideous and not user friendly.

A more detailed description to provide context would be more helpful. Are you referring to the lock screen clock? Or in your Notifications bar? Or whichever widget you have?
If you don't like what's available by default on your Note, there are dozens of options available from the Play Store, with screen captures to show their appearances.

I've looked but not recently.

Digital all in one line and on the lock screen.

If I can customize as I used to with a lock screen widget all well and good.

Sorry if the post was terse. But I feel like I was going over old ground. Obviously, not.

My lock screen is on for such a short time I barely even get to see it before I am past it! I pretty much go from AOD to lockscreen (blink), unlocked and now on my home screen! That face recognition is lightning fast.

I use my phone for the function that used to be covered by a watch. So not not going into the phone at all.

I've done this with all my phones and I'm surprised that's unusual.

This^^^ I never see the lock screen for more than 1 second.

This👇

I use my lock screen in the same way I used a watch 20 years ago. Just a glance. That's all it takes.

Did you ever stare at a watch when you had one?

Maybe you still do have one? I don't. I quite reasonably expect my lock screen to fulfill that function.

What's a watch? (lol)

Exactly. I didn't like them even when they were a thing and just stopped using them at least 20 years ago. Didn't like them round my wrist.

(So a I am totally not in the market for a smart watch.)

I am just curious what people think the other reason there would be a clock on the lock screen. For the life of me I can't think what it might be. 🤔

Can the clock display be changed to landscape form instead of hour sitting on top of minutes on the lock screen?

Yes it can.

1. Go to Settings.
2. Select "Lock Screen and Security".
3. Select "Always On Display".

From there, select what you want on your screen. Plenty of things to choose from. :)

OK. Not getting this.

(1) I do this then if I turn the screen off and then wake up the phone, it's the old ghastly clock.
(2) I don't want it always on anyway but when it is "visible" it is too dim to read.
(3) If I change the clock as suggested and then turn "always on" off, it goes away anyway.

This doesn't seem to be a solution unless I am misunderstanding?

I just want a legible clock (1 line) when I wake the lock screen up? I am amazed this is still not soluble. I could do it on my Note 3 with third party software, no problem.

I may not be understanding. Is this what you want?:

I still have a watch (Pebble) and I frequently look at it for several seconds, stop and realise I forgot to actually make the time go from the watch to my memory. I do the same with my phone when using that.

As an aside, I turn my Always On on between 5am and 7:30 as a glance over bed clock. Phone sits landscape in a spiderpodium. If the display is not on it's too early to worry about how early/late it is.
It works great at 40% but does not adjust to rotation. It is a horrible big hours over minutes.
The dual clock is a nicer clock format but I only want one clock.
It would be nice if there were more formats to download and at least minimal customisation.

OK, so the idea is for minimum battery drain and I can live with mine.

For me the Always On display would make a perfect pocket watch if I needed to use it that way.

I won't be without my Pebble though. I keep my phone in shirt pocket and can turn the torch on with a press of the watch button when both hands are shopping filled and the stair light has gone. That and pulse monitoring after the wee bout of atrial fibrilation.

I was getting the phone fixed yesterday. Guys said - maybe the next software update - but they don't know a way round the stupid clock.

I doubt they know anything about "the next software update" either. Your best clue there is to look at S9 reviews, as I would expect the next software for the Note 8 to look like the S9 (I've not looked closely at those, but every picture I've seen still seemed to have the two line clock).

Yeah. I don't so much mind that it's standard, I mind they seem to have stopped 3rd party developers doing something sensible about it.

I was hopeful when I noticed that there was an Settings->Walpapers and Themes->Themes (Top)->AOD (Bottom).

Unfortunately people seem more concerned about putting pretty pictures in rather than making a nicer plain style. There are a few nicer ones there.

I wish I could find a landscape mode one though.
