Not getting gmail

I stopped receiving gmail emails on the android. How do I check what's wrong and/or see if they are in the inbox just not downloading/notifying me?

If they are not in your inbox they haven't been downloaded so you won't get any notifications.

Two things to check assuming you are using the Gmail app, go into 'Settings'-'Accounts and sync' and check when Gmail last synced. Then go into the Gmail settings and make sure 'sync' is on.

When did you first notice you weren't getting any emails?

Have you had an update recently?

Thank you tommo47. I first realized this morning that the email wasn't coming. Someone was supposed to send me a gmail late yesterday and it didn't come. I sent myself an email today from Outlook and it didn't come, either.

I checked the sync time stamp and it showed a little while ago. I just forced sync by tapping it, the time stamp was updated but now I got an error message "sync is experiencing problems." I expect that explains why I'm not getting email:thinking: .

But I want to ask you about the screenshot you posted above. My android does NOT show individual on/off slider buttons as you do. There is only a global auto-sync data slider button, which is off. Under that it shows Accounts, then lists Avast and Google below that. When I tap the auto-sync data slider button I get a warning that changes made on web will be applied by google to the phone and vice versa. I don't know what that means in real life but I don't want google going off and automatically updating who-knows-what. I just want the gmail dynamically downloaded into the inbox. (I manually update the Gmail software when I get the notification that an update is available.)

Hi @startac4, when I go to 'Settings'-'Accounts' and select the account I want look at I get :-

Screenshot_2020-05-22-03-49-36-973.jpeg

If I tap on 'Account sync' I get the page showing all items as shown in my previous screenshot with the time of the last sync and can force sync by tapping on each item.

Now this is interesting, there is a slight difference between my HTC 10 and my Lenovo tabM10.

The Lenovo is 'Settings'-'Accounts' and then as in my screenshots but the HTC is 'Settings'-'Accounts & sync' and then I get a page with the global sync slider which when tapped gives a warning about manual syncing/refresh. Below this is the list of accounts and if I tap on one of them I get the same pages as my screenshots, just an extra step.

As a matter of interest did you try tapping an account?

:thinking::)

I tapped google and got a list of google items. When I tap gmail I still get the error message that sync is not working - but will be back shortly(!) That's two days with that message so something is quite wrong here.

Hi @startac4, I'm reading through your posts again, and am a little puzzled:-

Am I right in that you have Sync off and manually refresh/sync to get your emails?

What do you mean by 'dynamically downloaded into the inbox'?

Have you tried it with Sync ON at all?

You could also try clearing the cache in the Gmail app and clear data too, if you clear data you will have to renter your account details.

Before clearing cache just note how much data is there.

I've just noticed your other thread about using Outlook and have to say am even more puzzled, it just seems to be complicating things .

I'm unclear on whether you're using the Gmail app, or receiving Gmail with another app using imap. I ask because a similar thing happened to me, and I found that the it dept at my company had turned off Gmail imap. (it's a company account administered by them) I won't use Gmail, as since it's a company administered account, I'm required to agree to giving IT access to my phone when setting up Gmail which will download an additional app notifying It. Not sure if this applies in your case, the Gmail sync thing will be shown whether or not you use the Gmail app. In any case, it's an easy work around, I just set up an outlook account, used the Gmail web interface to have it forward to the outlook account, and have the outlook account add a reply-to any outgoing mail showing my work account. It also auto cc:'s to my work account so I have a record of sent mail on Gmail. I guess the first thing to do is load up Gmail from a web browser and see if imap has been disabled.

Check your settings in synch is the biggest thing.
Check if you are getting notifications by swiping down and have them set as default like on social media,
that should be okay if you got an account linked in your gmail accounts, do like a dummy test like that.

Let's clarify some things: I used outlook to TEST if I would receive an email on the phone's Gmail and also whether I could send email THROUGH the Gmail account. Both failed just as they failed when doing it from the phone "Gmail app" - which continues to fail.

I have the global auto-sync off as I don't know what that does. There aren't any individual auto-sync setting in my android, as I explained above, contrary to what others have in their android settings. There are only two things listed under Accounts underneath "Auto-Sync data" slide button: Avast and google. What will it auto-sync do besides syncing Gmail to the phone's Gmail? (When I get google's notication that an update is waiting for Avast, I manually download it.)

As I wrote in a post (either here or in my other thread) the number of google userids and passwords is ridiculously confusing. I had four different passwords in my list for "google". I thought I straightened that out with re-setting the password on "accounts-google.com". For all I know the password on the "Gmail app" is messed up and I have no idea how to even find what google thinks it is there.

>>> I just logged on to Gmail on my computer, after going through my list of google passwords I got one to work. It is NOT the one I reset for the Accounts.google password, which last I checked still works there. I see all of the mail here on Gmail on computer. How do get it to sync? Is there a separate password somewhere in the phone for Gmail that doesn't match this one, that finally worked on the computer? If so how do I find it, check it and change it? Can I do address this from Gmail account on the computer?

You should be able to change your Google password from any device and once changed it will then apply to all devices you use to login.

Source Google search:-

"You can change your password for security reasons or reset it if you forget it.
...
Change your password
Open your Google Account. You might need to sign in.
Under "Security," select Signing in to Google.
Choose Password. You might need to sign in again.
Enter your new password, then select Change Password."

It also helps if you have a 'Recovery telephone number' and 'Recovery email' to verify who you are to recover your account.

Thank you tommo47. Perhaps I was not clear. The password I used for restting Accounts.google is NOT the password I used earlier to logon to Gmail on my computer.

>>>just tried again. I am at the point of just forgetting about and not using Gmail. Now when I go to accounts.google.com on the computer, it throws me into the Gmail inbox page. When I go to myaccount.google.com, I wind up on a different google home page. Now both of these, which I have up simultaneously, are taking the same password!!

And I still don't have any Gmail being synched to the phone. It just is sitting in the Gmail inbox on the computer. I will ask again, while asking for the patience of everyone for which all of this is neither puzzling nor frustrating, how do I get the Gmail to auto synch to the phone without anything else in "google" getting "synched", "updated", modified etc without my knowing what is being done where?

This is what I get when I open my Gmail app and go to 'Settings' - Sync Gmail is ticked.

This is what I get when I go into 'Accounts' on my tablet and tap on my Gmail account.

This is what I get when I tap 'Account sync'. Gmail is ticked along with all the others bar one. All the others could be unticked of course, but in my case this is what I want.

You should be able to find the same pages on your device, in particular the one within the Gmail app. As I said in my previous post there is a slight difference between my phone and tablet as far as the other two pages are concerned but I still arrive at the same page.

With the above settings mail arrives in my Inbox, usually within a few minutes of being sent, giving me the appropriate notification.

.You may need to sort out how many Google accounts with different passwords are in Myaccount.google.com - Security - Password Manager, and delete all but the one. Changing your Google password initially may take 24 hours, though that may only apply to Factory Resetting devices now. Your sole Google account is your Gmail address also, just to be doubly clear, with the same password. You may need to check the default forwarding settings in the mail.google.com page. Sync is your friend until you have Gmail working. It's best left synching most things imv, things have moved on and you are using a Google device..You may want to uninstall Avast security for now, by unchecking also in Device - Security - Device Admin Apps then removing. Bring it back later, but you don't need it. Also look at Managed Devices and remove old / unused / unknown devices, though they normally disappear eventually.

Now that's showing me something different. "Settings" was well hidden and off the main Gmail screen.
Not being familiar with much of Android devices - only began using them for more than phone calls/text fairly recently - I didn't know that there was a separate "settings" for Gmail. Which begs the question how did it get turned off, as it was working until a few days ago and I didn't know about the separate "settings" screen.

In Selecting this auto-sync, it warns me that now everything will be synced, not just Gmail. I'll have to watch for what that really means.

It is working now. Thank you tommo47. Appreciate all of your help.

And that you Tony Madden for taking the time to post your explanation with the screenshots, and clarifying how google ids/passwords work. Your help is also much appreciated.

Hi @startac4, you're welcome, glad it's resolved :).

As far as 'everything' being synced, if you switch all but the Gmail one OFF then only Gmail will sync automatically.

What makes it difficult sometimes is that manufacturers do their own thing with their devices and you get different menus and paths and nomenclature, but when it comes down to app level then each app has it's own integrity and providing that you keep your apps updated to the latest version you can expect identical menus and facilities across all devices.

:)
