Help Not receiving one person's texts

I have a friend from whom I do not receive texts. I have AT&T and a Galaxy S5 with 4.4.4
He has an iPhone from Verizon. The only odd thing about his account is that he has his caller id blocked.
I can text him but his texts never get to my phone. I cannot even see them in my usage list on ATT.com.
My wife receives his texts. She has an iPhone with AT&T. he has this problem with no one else regardless of carrier and operating system. I checked his contact information for me and sent myself a text from his phone. It never arrived on my phone.

Any ideas what could be the issue?

I do not have any kind of kind of call / sms blocker installed.

Have you ever had an iPhone with your current number? There is an issue where you are setup under your Apple account to use iMessage and you have to disable that if you switch to an Android Phone.
