Root not staying connected to computer

hello,

i'm trying to root the phone. i don't really know what im doing about computers and cell phones. trying to root the phone, but the phone is only connecting for a couple of seconds. i can access the phone, that looks like VERIZON MOBILE folder, but then goes away. the phone is still charging, but i cant access it, and its not popping up in the My Computer. the phone gives me 4 options as to what to do with the phone, charge or usb mass storage, or pc data mode, and windows media sync. it wont install driver. whats up?

Yes it was on. thank u for ur patience. I was reading about the cord? Possible? But even if I didnt want to root but add like mp3s to the sd card, I cant. I was able to load things on the card when I first get the phone. Now, its like a limited interaction.

Try a different cable. The ones they come with are crappy.

other cables same thing. i think the issue is, is that i plug the phone in and the computer recongnizes it, then the phone begins some sort of connection process. the top bar (with battery, and those little icons) says" usb Settings", this is the time when it is available, lasts about 20 seconds. then it kicks in and says "usb connected" and "usb debugging connected", disconnects from the My Computer availble external memory sources, and is no longer avaiable to access. its as if it the computer does not recognize the phone is plugged in to it. if i go to usb settings and turn it to a mass storage device, it shows back up, but with a bunch of files and folders i cannot do nothing with.
