Note 4 battery question

My Note 4 died a couple days ago.

My fault, left it laying on the dash of the truck while charging and also running Google Maps for a GPS.

I am hoping that the battery just overheated and internally shorted/died/crapped out....
whatever.

My DVM shows 0.00 volts when measuring across the two terminals marked '+' and '-'

When it is put on charge, the phone gets hot, so I am assuming the regulator circuit is complaining of an over current condition.

has anyone measured the voltage across those two terminals?
do you see voltage there when the battery is out of the phone?

I have seen smart batteries where the output terminals are not "connected" until a proper circuit is made to one of the other two remaining terminals.

Curious Minds want to know.

Hi,

Well, I have not measured this before, because it seems that my mind is just not curious enough, but after reading this post yesterday I decided to give it a whirl.

It appears that my (admittedly non stock) battery shows a 3.75v PD across those contacts with a 30% charge. So, I would say that you did manage to kill the battery somehow. Colour me impressed since I would not have imagined that leaving a phone in the sun would have had such an effect, but you learn something every day I guess.

If you are looking for a reasonable and cheap replacement then check Amazon for Anker batteries. Some people have had bad experiences but, since I have taken your advice to not completely drain the battery, my one seems to be working out just fine.

Regards,
Eric.

thanks Eric,

I really appreciate that backup information.
I have two OEM batteries in the mail and are supposed to arrive tomorrow.
I could buy two batteries online cheaper than I could buy one here at the local phone store....

so, I figured I would just get two of them.
I am so impressed with the Note 4, that worst case, if it does not come back to life, I will get another one off of Swappa.

Since you mentioned Anker..... I bought their 26800 PowerCore battery pack recharger.
I am here to tell you that is one very powerful thing to have with you.

I just returned from a 10 day motorcycle tour, and was using my Note 4 and after its' demise to the sun, my S5 for a lot of help in finding things, as a GPS app, etc..... the Anker 26800 was recharging my phones 3 and 4 times a day, and giving me about two days of use before I needed to recharge it....

I am pretty faithful at putting my phones back on charge when the Low Battery alarm goes off at 40%...
That Anker will recharge the Note 4 from 40% to 100% in about 45 minutes. awesome!!!

( hint to the wise.... if you have a spare phone, and you are leaving home for a long long while, take it with you. You just never know when it will become the most important thing you packed )

Hi,

How long your batteries last with location services and BT always on (connected to my garmin watch)?

Usually people have these turned off. But I can't. Location services are rewuired by Garmin Connect on MM.

So what's your experience?

Is the awake that drains my battery?

Hi,

I also have location services on all the time (I am too lazy to turn it off) and BT is also always on (although only connected when I listen to music with my headset adapter or car). When I am not listening to music, I have no noticeable battery drain at all, other than when I have the screen on or am hitting up the CPU. If I am listening to music (i.e. constant BT activity) then I do notice a significant drain, but not quite as bad as yours. Although I usually always have the BT client close to the phone.

I guess it all depends on what the smartwatch is doing over BT, but I can't imagine that it is heaver use than streaming music. So, to summarise, yes, active BT is going to use battery but your curve is worse that I would expect. There would be some mileage in turning on developer options and looking under process stats. This helped me to track down what has been killing my battery in the past.

Lastly, if your phone is awake then it will, of course, use more battery. The question you need to answer is: Is the process that is keeping my phone awake useful to me? This you can also work out with process stats.

Good luck...

Regards,
Eric.

No good reason to turn off location services.
I never do.... it is only used when an app calls for location, and only then.

A review:
My Note 4 died about a month ago: a Klutz laid it on the dash of the truck while it was charging, in full sunlight.

Fast Forward 30 days while waiting for FexEx SmartPost to loose the 1st battery order, and then I tracked it to Tulsa, OK just 15 miles from home, and they send it back to Olathe, KS again, to be redelivered to Tulsa, OK and then finally, after me calling them and cussing them out for their stupidity at loosing everything twice, they scurry around, and miraculously find the battery and bring it to me.
suffice it to say, I am warning everyone, to never, ever, but never, buy from a vendor who uses FedEx SmartlessPost as the delivery service... I have never in 73 years, have I experienced such incompetence as what has occurred with 'Smartpost'

It took a full month to find/order/wait for a replacement battery to see IF the phone survived, and only the battery was dead...

Well, the battery arrived today, I placed it in the phone, plugged in the charger.....
about 30 minutes later I feel to see if anything is hot/warm.

The rear camera is Very Hot to the touch.... ?? that is not an area where I would suspect the charge regulator to be located??

When the charger was plugged in, the usual Android figure displaying "charging" did not show up.
after I noticed it getting hot, I tried to power it on.... no luck, it is still dead...

so, removed the battery from the 'hot phone' and let it cool down.
then I plug in the charger w/o the battery installed.
yup, it is getting hot again, just above the SD card slot, to the left of the camera ( looking at it with back off )

.... I am now the Proud owner of a Very Dead Note 4... :(

Never mind AZ, at least you were able to try a new battery, unlike the poor people who buy phones with no replaceable battery and have to bin it, are you going to buy another Note 4? Phil

yup, I have to get another one.

and now, I will be damn sure to enquire as to whether it has been getting hot.....
ie, why are they wanting to sell their Note 4 ??

it is just too darn good, to not replace it with another Note 4.... I don't need the 5...
does anyone know if the battery in a Note 4 will fit the Note 5?
I now have 3 batteries for a Note 4 :) :)

The local Batterys Plus store wants $40 for just 1 battery.
I bought two for $19.95 with free Smartless Post shipping with FedEx dumb ship.

First of all, let me offer my condolences for your loss. The internal temperature of the phone must have exceeded 80 degrees C / 176 degrees F for you to have cooked a capacitor and created a heater instead. I have heard about this problem, but have not experienced it myself. I guess you should feel lucky that the capacitor didn't burst into flames.

does anyone know if the battery in a Note 4 will fit the Note 5?

The Note 5/7 both have soldered in, non removable, batteries. So no luck there. But even if this was not the case my Note 1/3/4 all have different batteries :(

Regards,
Eric.

argh!
okay, guess I'm going to just find a decent Note 4...
I really liked the way the one I had worked, it never gave me any of the PITA complaints that some folks have written about.
maybe I can luck out with getting another good one again.

Okay,

time for an update..... some guy we don't know, hides behind the moniker of @The_Chief decided that a Note 4 that is rooted isn't up to his skill level

anyway, he threw it out the winder and I found it.... so, I now have a Note 4 that is working.

now, for the reason of this post....
recall the questions about the battery?

the old battery measures 0.00 volts across the + and - terminals.
two new ones also do the same.

the Note 4 that I got in working order, pulled the battery, and it measures the same...

ergo, IMO, you cannot make a definitive determination about a cellphone battery being good, if it is NOT in a working phone.

Now, that battery that was in the Note 4 that burned up on the truck's dashboard? it is quite truly a dead brick. if a charger is applied, the circuit board to he left of the camera gets very hot, and very fast.

Okay, what about the battery that was in that phone when ole Sol's UV rays killed the phone. is it any good?

the answer is YES, it is just as good as any of the other 3 batteries... and it is back in the "new to me Note 4"...
why? because it has a Qi charger installed on it..... and that works just fine also... Ole Sol didn't kill the Qi charger.
