Note 5 software failure

My att note 5 is out of warranty. I sent it to samsung for repair. They said the software failed. This happened after my last update. This also happened last august and samsung repaired it for free. The want to charge me $170 to fix it this time. They explained parts need to be replaced including the screen. I had no issues with the screen.

It stopped fast charging, it would autoload google vr app, self reboot, load a recovery screen on its own. I thought it was a broken usb plug on the phone when this happened last year, but samsung confirmed that it was a software issue.

How can I fix it myself? A hard reset did not clear any of the issues.

I hate to say but your reaching the usual end of the road time period for the note 5. Typically speaking after the last security patch and major o.s update the general life expectancy from what I have seen and read is about five years.
My suggestion is you see if there is a cellphone repair shop close by. They will be cheaper. You can go in explain your issues and they can look at.ubreakifix is a good one.

Sorry I misspoke. The note 5 is barely going on 3 years. Take it to a repair shop or see if you trade it in for note 8 or 9 if you want

There's an inconsistency here: you say that they claim it is software, yet they also say they need to replace the screen. If the second statement is true then there must be a hardware problem.
That is exactly what I asked Samsung about. They said in able to repair the issue the screen would have to be removed and it would require a new replacement. I explained that in August of 2017 that the phone had the same exact issues after an update and they repaired it for free. They refused to repair it for free again and said they would have a tech inspect it again since I mentioned they reflashed the software on it last year ( so they explained at the time) and it resolved the issues.

If you want to try and flash the stock firmware yourself, it's a fairly easy process if you have access to a Windows PC. Post your complete model number and I will be happy to help.

I get the phone back tomorrow morning. I will post the model. Thank you! can you post a link where I can download the latest android version so I can run it on my mac with parallels? Im having trouble finding stuff on here and xda. Things looks so different from back when I use to be a regular on here.

There used to be a Mac compatible Odin utility called J- Odin. Not sure if still available or if it will work on newer Samsung phones.
Odin is the Samsung flash tool.

Might be a problem finding firmware for the 920A since it is AT&T branded and they don't like to release their firmware. I'll do some searching at XDA soon as I get a chance, might find a leaked or extracted version.

I was able to find up to RB5 here
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=211108
AT&T list the current version as RG1, July 2018.
Can you post a screenshot of the current version you have in Settings, About Phone?

Looking at the baseband, you are fully updated to RG1. Usually you can not downgrade so the firmware in the link I posted probably won't be able to use.
About the only thing that I can recommend would be a factory reset.
One of the things I have always hated about AT&T, they treat their firmware as Top Secret.

I've done a factory reset. didnt fix the issues.

Guess you have to hold off till someone at XDA gets a copy of RG1 and post a link. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Stupid AT&T!
