What type of messages are these? If they are SMS then delivery report is all that's supported, regardless of what phone you use (read reports are not part of the SMS protocols).
Various internet messaging apps can provide read reports, but they are completely different in how they work (even if they appear similar). Some apps that support both SMS and internet messaging may confuse this picture further if they use the same inboxes for both, as they'll be able to provide read reports or even "someone is typing" when the recipient is connected to internet messaging but not when using SMS (an obvious example is iMessage, which uses Apple's internet messaging to other iMessage users and SMS/MMS to everyone else).
