still get sound when notification default in in silent mode.

I'm confused by your post. The title refers to notification "default," but your text says to silent mode, which is something totally different. Each app usually has it's own setting for notification sound (or none at all). It sounds like all you did was set the default. Now you need to go into each app and make a selection. There are a relatively small number of apps with audible notification (email, Gmail, SMS, FB/Twitter, and some games), so this should not be a big deal to set up (and only needs to be done once). If you are in fact referring to audible notification in silent mode, I have no answer and have never heard of this issue.
