Notifications on lock screen - how to get icons only?

I have a few apps which generate relevant notifications

- SMS (Messaging; not the stock app)
- Whatsapp
- Telegram
- Email (Maildroid)
- FR24

Currently I have these configured to do one beep and blink the LED.

For the messaging apps I could not find any way to get anything showing on the lock screen, short of the text itself showing also (which I don't want for obvious privacy reasons). So I disabled all lock screen notifications.

I am not sure if this is even possible. I would like e.g. an email icon (icon only) to appear on the lock screen if there is an email to look at.

But I don't want pop-ups when the phone is unlocked. I find them a PITA because you have to wait for a while for the popup to go away before you can continue doing anything near the top of the screen.

Go to Settings, then Device, then select Notifications. Once that page comes up, choose Advanced in the top right-hand corner. Now find the sms app you are using and you will see some fine-tune settings, like this:
  • Allow notitifications
  • Set as priority
  • Preview in pop-ups
  • Hide on lock screen
  • Hide content on lockscreen
Preview in pop-ups and the lock screen settings are what you are looking for. Change for this app and then apply whatever changes you need for each of your other apps.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Unfortunately it does not display anything on the lock screen. It just removes the lock screen and shows the wallpaper, which one swipes off to get in. No icons get displayed.

Also I don't have Settings / Device (droid v6 here) but I think I found what you referred to.

I think I want "preview in popups" disabled because I don't want messages to appear in *any* popup, locked or not.

I just wanted an icon of some sort popping up on the lock screen.

Check out the setting for "Hide Content on lockscreen". When I use that for the text messaging app that I have (AwSMS Beta), when I receive a text message, it shows me the icon for AwSMS and says, "AwSMS" and the next row shows "Contents Hidden". I then have to unlock my device to see the content.

Let me ask you a Q:

With your config, when you are doing something on the phone (i.e. unlocked) and a message arrives, do you get a popup at the top, which covers a bit of your existing app?

I don't want that, either :)

That may depend on your app, but you can turn off that for most apps by turning off the "Preview in pop-ups". I did that successfully for AwSMS and it removed the popup at the top that you are annoyed by (as long as within the app I also turned off Heads Up, which is an in-app replacement of the popup). Confused yet? LOL.
So for most apps, that option within Notifications will fix it, but there may also be a separate Heads Up, Chat Head or something similar within the settings of the app itself.
