Notifications

Hi everyone,
I just got an HTC One M9, and so far do not like the notifications at all. I can't seem to do two things my old phone would do:
1. Show me an icon in the top alerts bar without playing a sound for when I receive a new email in my Gmail account. It looks like I can set Gmail to show notifications or not, but not choose the icon or sound.
2. Use different notification sounds for different events. It looks like I'm limited to the same notification sound for emails (from my work account) as for text messages? That really sucks.

Both of these are enough to make me take the phone back, so please if anyone knows, am I missing something in settings? Is this an Android platform change, and not my phone?

Thank you!

Welcome to ANDROID FORUMS susan3556 !:)
I went into the notifications settings for each app (separately/independently) you mentioned & all the options you mentioned are there on my M9.
My model is an unlocked/Developer edition, perhaps some of the carrier-specific models are a bit different?

Hi Susan, my M9 is with EE and I have the same options as @KOLIO - every app offers the full range of sounds including 'none' and the mail and gmail apps allow different sound selection for each account as with previous devices/android versions.

Hi guys, I got mine through t-mobile. When I go to Settings > Sound & Notification, I only have "Notification sound" and "Alarm". (plus Ringtone). When I scroll down to App notifications, and find Gmail, my only option are "Block" and "Priority". If I go to Gmail Settings > General Settings, there are no notification settings, just swipe actions, reply defaults, settings like that.

tommo47, I'm sorry, I don't know what EE means! ;-/

When I look at the HTC help documents, they all match what my phone shows. So am I seeing something different because you both have developer or unlocked phones?

Thank you for your input!!

That's strange,especially for the G-Mail app:
When I go to the G-Mail app SETTINGS > tap on the actual account under General Settings (XXXXX AT gmail DOT com) > Inbox Sound & Vibrate > Notifications
The options are there for Label notifications/Sound/Vibrate/Notify For Every Message.

As for the texting app when I tap on MESSAGES > Settings,I see similar options, for receiving/sent & delivery confirmations notifications.

Now,as for further customizing notification sounds/pop-ups per contact, you'd probably need to d/l a contact/messaging/e-mail app(s) from the PlayStore that have a bit more in the customizing dept.

Hi Susan, EE (originally Everything Everywhere) is my service & contract provider, it includes Orange and T-mobile in the UK which as brand names are likely to soon disappear. Although my M9 is not obviously branded with the EE logo I take for granted that it is locked to them as I upgraded directly with them. My M7 was unlocked but I got that through Phones4U.

Like KOLIO, I'm puzzled about your Gmail, when you are on the Settings page which has :-

General settings

Your Gmail account/s name/s

Add account

have you tapped on each of your account name/s?

This will open a new page with the options mentioned by KOLIO, I have four Gmail accounts and could set a different sound or vibrate off/on for each one.

With the message app, tapping the 3 dot menu button top right, then settings, opens a list with 'Notifications' at the top, tapping that gives options for sound selection etc.

Hi all,

I figured this out - user error. Silly me, I was going to Settings and needed to tap on my account name. Unintuitive, for sure, but the settings I was looking for are there. Thank you for helping out this newbie! I don't change cell phones enough to be savvy on all this setup stuff.

Thank you for all your help!!

Hey,

I cannot change the sound of the Messages app. The default text app. Looked in app and nothing for sound. My notification settings are correct as well.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Unless it's different with Sense 7 I'd expect that to be in the Messages app's Settings > Notifications > Notification sound.

I've moved the thread to our M9 forum so other owners can advise directly.

On my M9 it is exactly as Hadron expects :-
