Nova and OTA

Does Nova launcher have to be installed as a system app? I am rooted (via fastboot not CWM) and would like to try it out but prefer to still receive OTA's. If I can install Nova and still receive OTA's will I notice any lag or system slowdown because it was not flashed as a system app? Still kind of a noob so thanks for the help!
