NTSB recommends ban on use of mobile devices for drivers

NTSB is recommending that all mobile devices be banned for use by drivers. Thoughts on this? I think it's the nanny state gone way, way, way too far.

sounds like a wonderful idea...... right after they ban eating in the car, putting on makeup in the car, changing the radio station, make it a requirement that you prove you had a minimum 8 hours sleep before driving, etc.....

I understand why they want to do this for texting and talking on the phone without a handsfree device. But they've gone too far on the proposed ban for all handsfree devices. I use the bluetooth thats built into my car along with voice commands without any problems. It's no different than having a conversation with a passenger.

It's unfortunate but it looks like many states will pass bills based on NTSB recommendations.

It's easy to pick on cell phones. IMO, talking on a bluetooth headset is no more distracting than talking to a person in the back seat. If they are going to make a total ban on cell phones then they might as well ban talking at all while driving. Lots of cars have large touchscreen displays in the front. I guess it's of to play with this while driving but not talk on a cell phone?

I'm not for a total ban on using cell phones, but I can understand adding some limitations. In Austin it is already illegal to text and drive, but here in perpetual Sundays-ville (a suburb of Austin) an increasing number of drivers seem to find it difficult to drive the posted speed limit, much less focus on what is around/infront of them. While I love playing frogger just so I can drive the speed limit; it would be nice if drivers could focus on driving instead of chatting. Granted, it is more a personal annoyance for me, and not really a safty concern. However, I have also noticed an increase in the number of cars drifting within their lane only to pass them and see that they have their eyes glues to a cell phone.

It is easier for me go get on board with a ban or restriction because I do not often use my cell while driving (nobody likes me enough to call/txt :P), but for others that spend a lot of time on the road during the day I can see how it would be an annoyance to not be able to conduct thier business if a ban went into place.

And like others have said, if you are going to ban cellphones then you are going to have to ban other things as well.

Driver fined for eating his sandwich | News

In the UK and Europe, those activities are already illegal and have been so for a number of years now, drivers have been prosecuted for driving while eating and smoking.

One doesn't normally have to do much to change the radio station, adjust the volume or change CD track, as radio controls are often on the wheel in modern cards, along with the turn indicators, A/C, cruise control, horn, etc.

I had a tyre blow-out once at 70MPH on a motorway, if I was holding a phone or sandwich, and not had both hands on the wheel. The wheel would have probably had spun round uncontrollably, and the car could have flipped. Having both hands on the wheel, meant I could stop that happening and bring the car to a controlled stop.

make it a requirement that you prove you had a minimum 8 hours sleep before driving, etc.....

That's pretty much what truck and bus drivers have to do via the tachographs. Legal minimum hours of rest between between driving sessions. If the tachograph records that a driver hasn't had a legal minimum rest period for a given number of hours driving, they can be prosecuted. Of course the tachograph can't prove that a driver was actually sleeping though.

Someone on G+ suggested banning kids while driving since they're far more distracting than cell phones are.

If you have to smack your kids leaving only one hand on the steering wheel then yes, they can be more distracting.

Disclaimer: That was tongue-in-cheek. Smacking your kids may be illegal depending on your location.

It is my understanding that the ban calls for all electronic devices, driver or passenger, I could be wrong it has been known to happen on rare occasion.;)

I for one think the ban on hands free is ridiculous, as has been stated a few times here it is no more distracting than talking to a passenger.

I am also one of those people who spends as much time driving as I do in the office (probably more, over 20K just since mid-June) and it would cripple my business.

I think it was just the driver, not the passenger. I just don't see them as distracting. Texting while driving is dangerous. You take your eyes off the road and focus on the phone. No problems with banning that except that we already have laws against inattentive driving. Whatever though. Talking on the phone while driving I don't buy. I don't see how that's any more distracting than talking to a passenger. If you argue that you have to take your eyes off the road to dial, I'll go along with that being distracting (albeit temporarily), but I don't see the need to ban handsfree.

Does this mean I can't use my ICOM ID-31A?

No. If you've had an ID-31A since the 15th or before you're apparently luckier than the rest and as such you're grandfathered in. Or get any of the HS-9x accy's.

Like SamuraiBigEd, I too spend an inordinate amount of time on the road during the course of my daily activities. Interstate 94, the main corridor between Chicago and Detroit.

One of my all time favorites(one of, sad to say it that way) is coming up on a careening driver that has their cell cradled between their jaw and shoulder in order to free up their hands to do anything but drive. Or the driver that has their laptop wedged open between them and the steering wheel, plugging sales numbers into a spreadsheet.

Count me as one who believes hands-free should be a requirement while operating a motor vehicle on a public road.
