Android Question

I'm running 4.1.1 on a Nexus S 4G Sprint.

Since the latest update, Google Play and Google Play Services were constantly autolaunching, running in the backgroud and KILLING my battery. I'm all about battery life, and have disabled everything non-essential to me.

I unistalled latest versions of google play and google play services and disabled them. Battery last's more than three hours again. Fantastic!

I now receive nuisance messages a few times a day requesting install/update Google Play. I have disabled notification on all apps. Any way I can kill the notifications to update the stuff I have removed on purpose? I'd rather not root. Messages are coming through GCM? Can I kill GCM?

Thanks!
