Help Odd sound issue at boot

alacombe

Lurker
About a week ago I did a factory reset on my phone, and since then I've had a problem with sounds when booting.

If the notification sound volume is set anywhere above 0, the phone starts playing the sound from /system/media/audio/ui/MediaPreview_Over_the_horizon.ogg. If I change the notification volume setting, I can hear both that sound and the notification sound I have set play. The MediaPreview_Over_the_horizon will keep looping until the phone is restarted.

If the notification sound volume is set to 0, the phone starts normally, and I can then increase the volume after boot and all behaves as it should.

The Over_the_horizon sound also seems to be associated with the media sound as it plays when I change that volume, but the constant playing issue seems to be related to the notification setting.

I tried deleting the sound file, and even without the file present (that I can find), the sound still plays.

Any suggestions?

LOL! Mine does this every once in a while for no apparent reason. Just have to live with it. Easy way to turn it off is to swipe down the notification bar at the top.

I stumbled onto your post while trying to resolve a similar issue, and I may have figured out what's going on, and how to resolve it. I'm guessing you're using some custom notification sounds. I'm also guessing that you have something that is triggering at least one notification at bootup (in the case you describe where you hear two notifications on top of one another, at least two notifications). Something that would trigger a notification could be unread text messages, unread email, etc. In my case I had unread text messages that triggered a notification at bootup, and the MediaPreview_Over_the_horizon.ogg sound file would play instead of my custom ringtone.

What I believe is happening (and you can sort of deduce this if you listen and watch the screen during bootup) is that the media scanner that runs at bootup (both on your internal memory and SD card) hasn't yet found all your custom notification sound files before the phone tries to send a notification (for unread texts, unread email, or whatever), and in this case, the notification sound defaults to that MediaPreview_Over_the_horizon.ogg. sound file. (Couldn't it default to ANYTHING but THAT? Ick.) My guess is the other notification sound you're hearing (on top of the MediaPreview_Over_the_horizon sound) is a separate notification, which happens to be set to use one of the system default ("stock") notification sounds, which the phone IS able to "locate" before it finishes the media scan.

You can test my theory by temporarily changing ALL of your notification sounds to stock notification sounds. (They can be different, just so long as they're all stock, i.e., "built-in, came with the phone" sounds.) Then reboot and see if you hear them all properly. (You may have to send yourself a text first
