Off Road Tools

As an off roader I would like an app that caters to my hobby.

Features:
- GPS/Mapping with the ability to cache map data before riding (no cell phone coverage in the bush prevents me from getting map images)
- Integration with Google maps: upload map tracks, waypoints, etc
- The ability to add quick markers on the map without requiring a lot of input: winching, water bar, water crossing, off camber, mud, etc
- Geotag photos and videos
- Trip logging
- Clinometer like the one available for the i-phone (Clinometer for the iPhone - Jeep Commander Forums: Jeep Commander Forum)
- Various Calculators: gear ratio, crawl ratio, tire size, metric to standard tire size, etc (Axle Ratio/Tire Size Calculator - Version 1.2 - Trucks 4x4 @ Off-Road.com, more here too: off road calculators - Google Search)

There is a lot more that could go into such an app, like first aid information, send GPS position by SMS at specified intervals, integrated checklists, etc. I am sure I can think of more to be added later.

i hear ya on being able to get prloaded maps. that would be nice for the places i ride. a couple apps i found helpful are: mytracks, and pintail for the lady...she likes to know that i'm still moving.

I was thinking about writing an app for off-roaders.

I was going to do "bread-crumbs", Clinometers, and saving waypoints in .kml.
Then I realize there is no money in it unless somebody like Land Rover sponsors and funds it.

The Clinometer is easy to do. There is already one branded for Nissan Xterras on the marketplace.

I don't know about the crawl ratio calculators.

What would be cool is an adventurecam that records video and saves the waypoints at the same time; producing Google Earth kml files so you can playback the session.

I use Mytracks but it crashes a lot, but funny thing is it doesn't stop recording when it crashes! What I would love is an app like Mytracks but with the ability to cache maps.

Yesterday I found Trimble Outdoors, seems to be what I am looking for as far as caching maps. It's payware for $9.99, I will give this a try next weekend when we go on a ride. If I don't like it I'll uninstall within the 24 hr grace period.

Let us know how you like it. There seems to be a shortage of mapping programs with topographic info (or I just don't know where to look). I like your idea of a 4x4 app though, maybe someone can get something going!
