Root Officially Updating a rooted Gingerbread

Hey guys

I Have a rooted Gingerbread ARC S
and I'm want to update it to ICS using Sony's "Update Service"
The question is: Does it harm my rooted phone?
or it just updates the system without harming anything although Its rooted.
