Offline maps

I know this has been asked a lot, but the most recent thread is 4 months old. Is there any good way to get offline satellite imagery, in a controlled way? I know I can sit there on google maps and try to preview every spot I'll want to see later at every zoom level, but that's kind of lame IMO. I'd really like to be able to select an area ahead of time and get all (or selected) zoom levels - AND have the data saved and not have it overwritten by new data by mistake.

I see that there are a lot of programs that rely on MOBAC, but IMO the program is very hard to use and doesn't really have any good data sources. I really want satellite, but I could live with topo. I understand you used to be able to use Google as a source, but not anymore.

Maverick can use Bing aerial data, but MOBAC doesn't have that.

Any leads would be great.

I use Maverick because it has an easy user interface
But true, for every hiking trip in a new area you have to preload this area, with all its zoom levels.
But you have the maps on the SD card for next time.

If topo maps are good enough then have look at ViewRanger
But you have to buy its (good) premium topo maps.
And maybe ViewRanger hasn't maps of your country at all.

For Maverick, you have to manually pan and zoom around, right? I didn't see a way to select an area and know that you had it all. It seems to be the same as Google maps as far as I can tell. They both cache some unknown amount of data for offline use, but you have no control.

Maverick caches the area which is shown on screen.

The tile level (zoom) is shown between the the (+) and (-) magnifying glasses.
So I use only this magnifying glasses for map zooming, not pinch-to-zoom

So if I need a reasonable sized area at different zoom levels, I need to look at everything on the screen. This is really hard to know that you've covered everything, and to my knowledge there is no indication of how much cache will be used and when it is used up. The only thing I could figure out was to go to airplane mode and see if there were holes. But this doesn't protect you from looking at something else before your trip and accidentally bumping what you need from cache...

Maybe cache is not right word

The preloaded map tiles are stored on the SD card in a folder 'maverick'.

I see what you mean, and yes your inklings could be possible
