Root OK...I wanna root my Razr Maxx...HELP!

Mostly just to see what its all about...and because I can :) (I think...)

I've never rooted a phone but I'm not completely illiterate with PC's...that said, I wanna use the best option possible to root my phone in case I wanna go back to unrooted.

I will keep the phone stock otherwise, Blur is fine by me...I just wanna see what root is all about.

I would appreciate any experienced advice I can get.

I'm downloading Matts stuff as I type this...is that a good way to go?

Oh yeah...I knew that :)...what I meant was the new kernel may or may not make a difference.

I've decided to wait for an official OTA update though instead of messing with that leak...too many ways for leaks to turn south.

I do have a question though...

Since I'm keeping the Blur and not flashing any custom ROM's...do I even need Safestrap or Bootstrap?

I've already installed Titanium Pro and frozen the bloat...trying to make sense of the backup process.

The advantage that they do have is that you can make a backup of everything exactly the way it is so that if you can't find the bloatware to unfreeze it or you accidentally mess something up you have a way to restore it. Safestrap is my preference.

That being said, you don't NEED to have either (currently I don't have either).

It's also worth noting that you can only have ONE. :)

OK...just for the sake of knowing ahead of time...

To go back to stock unrooted .211 all I'd need to do is unfreeze the bloat, uninstall the apps that require root, and select option #9 on the 1.7 utility and follow the instructions...is that right?

Never mind...figured it out...its option 2 on the utility, AP fastboot, etc.

I could still use some help understanding all the backup options on Titanium Pro if anybody should happen by...

Thank You...that did help!

One more question...I'm not exactly clear on how being rooted affects updates...such as the .214 (if it becomes an official update)...will the OTA update work while the phone is rooted?

Or is it better to temp unroot then get the OTA?

My Maxx is no longer rooted...root is OK, but with ICS allowing a user to freeze most of the bloat...root sorta lost its appeal to me.

I went back to stock using Matt's 1.81 utility...as usual, it worked like a charm.

To be honest, the only reason i root anymore is to run ad-free. Other than that, I'm happy with the phone as is!

Quick question, if I root and say I want to flash zip packages for things like Google now or some zip files like beats audio for example, would I need safestrap or bootstrap to flash the zip? And would I be able to flash those zip files on stock? And , although I don't think I'll do it, I will need the kexec kernel to over clock right? Also, to unroot using Matt's utility I just flash the ap fastboot option which is unrooted? Lastly, how would you remove a custom recovery? Sorry for the long post. Thanks :)

To answer the question about unrooting...

Install the latest USB drivers onto your PC...they are included in the utility, in the folder called "drivers"....there will be 2 sets, one set is for 32 bit machines, the other is for 64 bit machines....32 bit on top, 64 bit is the 2nd set...Eventually Motorola will update the drivers again so it might be best to use Motorola's website to get the driver updates (Motorola Device Manager)

Plug the phone to your PC (preferably with the factory cable), put your phone in AP fastboot mode, select option 1 from the utility...and follow the on screen instructions....you have to hit a button once every little bit, so keep an eye on it.

Thats all there is to it...
