Old email doesn't appear in edit

I have a contact with two email addresses and need to eliminate one. But when I try to edit, only the correct one appears . The old still shows on the contact screen and pops up as a suggested address when I send a new email.

There has to be a way to edit it.

-- Are you syncing your phone's Contacts with your online email service, or keeping your phone's Contacts only on your phone?

I use Gmail and I do sync between my phone and several other devices.

Sorry for not replying sooner , but I'm not getting email notices of replies even though I select that option.
