old guy using trying to understand

I just got this new phone 4gig? And don't know anything about anything.here is my question it says that its free for slow downloading witch im sure the phone will be slow at anyway but ever thing I look for says its going to cost money.im probably not doing soothing wrong and have read a few of the new people post and no one has asked what im looking for.don't forget im old and am a mustang creek and any help would be great and if im not posting anything that is wrong please tell me.thanks slick
