One favourite android app?

Tyseyh

Android Expert
Curious, I'm sat on the bus thinking... I wonder what other Android users favourite Android application is.

I think mine is Tasker.
Had it a while now, gets used so many times a day.

So yeah, Tasker.
What's yours?

Probably got to be ES File explorer, not the most entertaining and interesting app but so easy and quick to use. Use it daily for copying files from/to my phone/PC and its tottaly free and allows full root and access to /data

So ES File Explorer for me.

O and also exDialer is great dialer so that as well.

Tasker. Period. Totally a no-brainer. It's my most-used app.

And I know you didn't ask, but I'm telling you anyway:
Second favorite is ColorNote. Can't beat it for features and simplicity. Easy to make checklists, easy to make notes in meetings and appointments, and easy to schedule reminders. I think this was one of the first apps I ever installed on my phone and I've been hooked ever since.
Third favorite is Grocery iQ. Love being able to scan items, and sync the grocery list between devices.

Swiftkey X because it suits my typing style so well, closely followed by gmote because it suits my laziness so well!

A shorter answer would be what can't Tasker do. :)

Tasker reads my Google Calendar and automatically silences my phone during meetings. If someone texts me while I'm in a meeting, they'll get an autoreply that lets them know I'm in a meeting and will get back in touch with them later.

When I hit my Tasker "Driving" widget, Tasker throws a couple of apps in my notification bar for quick access, launches BeyondPod and starts playing my podcasts, turns off my PIN lockscreen (I use Secure Settings plugin for this), and reads aloud any SMS or Google Voice text messages I receive while I'm driving. It will also send an SMS back saying that I'm driving and will respond soon.

When I get home, Tasker sees that I'm home and turns on wifi and turns off my PIN lockscreen. At a certain point in the evening, if Tasker sees that I'm home, it will silence my phone automatically. Tasker will also read my Google Calendar to see what time I need to get up the next morning (default is 5:30am, weekends are 7am, vacation days are 7:30am, or I can set a special wakeup call if I need to get up before 5:30am) and will harass me at the proper time until I wake up and stop the alarm. Tasker also retrieves the local weather report from Google via SMS.

Tasker will initiate a wakeup call to my husband based on a Google calendar entry. If I'm in a meeting, it won't use the speakerphone but will still make the call.

I also have a couple of egg timer tasks set up so I can make my husband's hard-boiled eggs the way HE likes, and mine come out the way I like. :)

That's just a few things I've set up. And I've barely scratched the surface of Tasker's capabilities.

That is amazing!
i need to think of more ways to use Tasker, i only have it do very basic things for example, I'm at home, turn WiFi on. Screen off- Data off -Screen on Data on.
very basic things. I think I'm going to have a play with it some more.

Oh, and Swiftkey x
I do enjoy that program, but i think i could live without it if need be.

When I read the title of the post I thought "Mine's Tasker" so I wasn't too surprised to see it's other people's favourite too. Things I do with it include setting it to silent mode when in Church on a Sunday, turning all notifcations to silent and set to clock mode when plugged in to mains overnight, set certain apps to maximum brightness, connect to my wifi when I get home, on work days set volume to 1 as it's always on my desk and I jump sky-high if it rings, set Winamp to start when I plug my headphones in and set volume to mute during doctor's appointments. I don't consider myself a power user of Tasker and I'm sure there are loads more things I can do with it but I think it's well worth the money. Tricky to learn though.

CPUboost lite. Tripled my battery life. :)
I set it up so it lowers the CPU Mhz drastically when the screen is off, but puts it on full whenever the screen is on. Very handy, almost no lag, and still keeps the great performance when the screen is on.
I'm using MIUI with this.

Probably root explorer for me, although i think you need to be s-off to get the best from it. just my personal opinion.

How do you get Tasker to read your google Callender and make your phone go to silent automatically based on the times in the Callender without user intervention?

Love a bit of the Llama myself.

Have bought Tasker and gave it a good go but was all a bit much for my fragile little mind. Did try some of the walk thro's but there wasn't one that made it easy. Anyone know a good one?

I have a profile that uses a State of "Calendar entry" and I use pattern matching to find the word *meeting* (or a whole list of words like *meeting*/*appointment*/*training* etc.) in the event title for whichever Google calendar or calendars I'm wanting to monitor. Then in the task for that profile, I have it go into silent mode, among other things.

I never could be bothered to learn about Tasker. Much to my detriment it would seem!

My one app I love? Swiftkey has made a vast improvement to my sausage fingers. Google docs is useful for transferring and handling documents on the go (useful for work). I also love MyTracks and GeoCaching for a bit of fun. Just novel little apps which helps me enjoy a simple walk/jog that bit more.

Never noticed calender entry, I'm going to have to look at that, sounds very interesting.

One thing I do that adds a bit of complexity is that instead of running the profile for the specified length of the calendar entry (I never know how long it will take at the doctor!), I throw a notification entry into the title bar that I can tap to undo the settings I change (silent mode, display timeout, etc.). That way, if by some chance someone should call me right after a meeting is scheduled to end but we are running long and still discussing items, my phone will still be in silent mode until I specifically take it out by tapping the notification icon.

It's just what works for me. You may prefer to have the task automatically revert the settings back when the calendar entry ends (easiest to do).

haha thats wicked.

I think you should write a tasker guide ;)

I'm nowhere near smart enough to do that, especially with the new version and scenes. You should see what some people are doing with Tasker! I hang out on the Tasker Google group, and I don't understand half of what they're talking about. LOL

Everything I wrote in Tasker was in response to an annoyance I had with my phone or my environment. Until I find a new annoyance (or an update breaks what I've previously written, which is annoying in and of itself), I pretty much let Tasker do what it does, so my knowledge is generally basic/older version knowledge.

One of these days when I have time, though, I'm going to learn about this new scene stuff. Maybe. :)

Reinstalled Tasker today and have set it up for quiet hours etc. Also managed to set Google Music to start everytime I connect my Bluetooth headphones :-) quite impressed with myself.

Is a great app and looking forward to learning more.

I'll be happy to share my (old, limited) knowledge.

Anybody want an egg timer that vocalizes/notifies every minute during the countdown, then vocalizes/notifies in ten second increments during the last minute?

How about a really annoying alarm clock with no snooze that sounds way too happy for that hour of the day, then sounds really angry if you don't actually wake up and turn it off?

Or a shopping widget that changes the display timeout to 10 minutes then launches your grocery list app? This one you could probably make smart enough to know you were at the grocery store and just do it all automagically, but I could never be bothered to run the cell tower near thingy to make this one location smart.

(I seem to have hijacked this thread quite badly. Sorry about that, Tyseyh.)
