Help One phone that shares 2 numbers..

Greetings all..

Bit of background to my question here.. My hard working father currently pays like 150 bucks a month to have two different more or less crappy cell phones; one personal, one for business.

I am trying to figure out, if maybe he upgraded to Galaxy s3 and joined google voice, if he might be able to have one cell phone with two different numbers. He would need to have a different ring tone assigned to each phone of course, so he could distinguish who was calling him, etc..

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Any and all info thanked and appreciated!

Yes, having 2 numbers can be accomplished with Google Voice.

Unfortunately, you can't have your cake and eat it too (in this case).

You can set GV to display either the original caller's ID, or your GV #, when an incoming GV call arrives. If you display the original caller ID, you won't know if they are calling the personal or business #. If you display the GV #, you won't be able to see the caller ID of the person calling the business line.

IMHO, he probably doesn't care about the caller ID for the business line... if not, set GV to display his GV # for incoming calls, and <POOF>, he'll know its a business call every time.

Thanks Sloheim!! This sounds awesome! I do have a few more questions.

1) How robust is google voice? Meaning, if he transfers his business line to google voice, does he run any risk of missing calls, etc..? This would be my father's primary line for business, and he would need to be reachable at that number between 8-6 nearly every day..

2) How long does porting take. I just went to g-voice web site, and saw that to port his number from an existing line, would cost 20 bucks, but it does not say how long it would take. Timing is pretty important. He does not want to be without a business line for very long if possible. Maybe a few hours.. He is also contemplating switching carriers.

That is really about it. Looking at the feature set with google voice, it is very hard to believe it is free. Astounding. Thanks for the help so far!!

Any advice on my last 2 questions? Namely, is google voice robust enough for a business line, and/or how long does porting take? thks~

$150 a month is NOT a lot of money........

For two crappy phones it is. He pays that much for two phones, all of which can do little more than place a call. I am looking to set him up with one smart phone that can facilitate two lines, and also provide him a slew of new features on top of what he currently has.

I use GV as my primary # that I hand out as my home # to everyone (which forwards to an Ooma #). I've never had any complaints.

I have never ported a #, so I can't say how long it takes... sorry about that...
