Help One X died; repair covered by warrant?

Well, quite unexpectedly, my One X died on me yesterday.

There I was, watching a YouTube video, then all of a sudden it freezes. I had to do a simulated battery pull to get it out of that (by which time it was getting quite warm). A couple of reboots and refreezes later (still getting hotter), it stops responding to the power button. Neither did it respond to the charger being plugged in.

No response at all. Completely dead.

I contacted HTC (it's still within the 24 month warranty), who are collecting it tomorrow to assess the damage.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so was the repair covered by warranty?

If not, I'm just going to get HTC to dump the phone and then I'll do an upgrade to something like the HTC One on O2 Refresh (been eyeing one up since my wife upgraded a month or so ago!).

If he is in the EU, the warranty will still cover it even if the bootloader is unlocked.
In EU law its on HTC to prove that an unlocked bootloader caused the problem.
 
On the water damage aspect, am I right in thinking that the black blob inside the phone at the top of the main board (by the camera) is one of the liquid indicators?

I prized the phone apart before sending it back to HTC just in case something had worked its way loose that I could sort myself. I don't know why this came to mind now, but I recall now seeing the word "void" in white letters on that black blob.

I honestly say with hand-on-heart that I have never dropped the phone in water or splashed anything on it (and certainly not around the time when it failed). I did tend to cycle (I commute by bike each day) with it in my jeans pocket, and it does sometimes get condensation on the screen in my pocket. From a bit of reading around, it seems these indicators are pretty sensitive, and can react to steam or particularly humid environments.

I didn't think to check any of the other liquid indicators, but I have a feeling that they're going to say that it's not covered by warranty.

To be honest, it's not the end of the world (I was thinking up upgrading early anyway, it's just been brought forward sooner than I expected!), but it would be interesting to know others have had similar problems with indicated water damage when there hasn't been any explicit incidents of actual water damage.

How annoying.

Just to fill you in on a little more, I sent the phone back with a crack running diagonally across the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. It wasn't that big (it didn't even come out as far as the bottom right-hand screen button). I knew about the crack (ironicaly it cracked a couple of weeks after I'd had the screen replaced when the whole thing shattered after I dropped it on the bathroom floor at work), but wasn't that bothered by it, so was going to leave it until the phone needed replacing.

When I sent the phone in, I wrote on my return form that I didn't want the screen replaced.

I've now had my quote back from HTC. They want to charge me to replace the screen! It seems the rest of the work is covered by warranty (there's no mention of the rest of the work in the quote), but the screen needs to be replaced, even though I expressely said I didn't want it replaced.

I just spoke with Customer Services, who said that they have to repair everything, and cannot repair only the bits that I want.

Grrr!

If you're spending the money anyway, just pay HTC to repair it so you've got a semi decent phone until the HTC M8(?) is released.

You can at least recoup some of the money when your contract is up by selling the working One X.
 
Good point, although, on reflection I may still go for the One. If I repaired my current One X now, and then upgraded to something else (M8?) next year, I'd be spending equivalently more than if I just upgrade now (since the phone is likely to have some sort of up-front cost when released).

I don't have to have the "next big thing". I just want something that replaces my broken One X and is better than my Desire! The One (with O2's current deals) fits that criteria quite nicely.

Also, from what I've read so far, the M8 (although only rumoured, of course) may not be a significant step up from the current One (it may be the equivalent step up from the One X to the One X+, instead of a step change like the One X to the One).

Plus I'm not that keen to get new models so soon after release (learnt that the hard way with my wife's previous One X, which suffered from the WiFi problem - I got a lot of ear-bashing for that!), so it would likely be mid 2014 before I considered getting something else. If the rumours surrounding the M8 are correct and it comes with the Snapdragon 800, unless you're not pushing the handset to its limits, you're really not going to notice the difference between that and the S600 found in the One.

I know what you mean re. early adoptor syndrome. My first Z1 had the yellow tint issue and my initial One X had the G sensor stop working (another common fault in early models).

I finally managed to get a decent hands on with the One last week (my boss got one) and it's amazing. Feels nice, screen is great and the sound that comes out of the speakers is on a par with what I get out of my SW100 Bluetooth speaker.

So, Jah, I totally understand and I reckon you'll be delighted with The One. :)

Indeed. It would be a bit disappointing if HTC do go for the S800, rather than the S805 or a further iteration (yet to be announced). I suppose that's a problem releasing a new phone so early in the year, when Samsung will likely release the S5 (or whatever it will be) after that, possibly with the next generation of processor.

Oh I am :)

Picked one up at lunchtime today. It's taken a while to get everything set up (mainly due to Android updates (now on JB 4.3!) and re-downloading all the apps/games I had on the One X - thank goodness for the Google Backup and Restore option!), but I'm almost there. It's a pain that I don't have any screenshots of what the layout of my screens looked like on my One X - I took some not long ago, but didn't back them up! Oh well...time for a fresh start I suppose.

I always look at a new phone as a clean slate and generally go for something totally different to my previous anyway.

Shame the entire thing cost you a fair bit, especially this close to Xmas.
