OnePlus Censors It's Forum

If factual information is posted on the OnePlus forum (that the moderators don't like), especially as a new thread it's removed in mere moments.

No trace left behind.

It's rather creepy and reminds one how lucky we are to live in a free country that respects us.

At first I did a double take in disbelief. But now one full month and many posts later I've seen it repeatedly. They're incredibly fast to remove the thread

I was ready to buy a OnePlus One, but will not give money to support a censored restricted company.

I still feel chills running down my spine. A shocking slap of reality. I'll never return to that site... Ever!

/deletes thread

Just kidding :p

I've seen a few reports of this over there from time to time the past few weeks. I havent been there myself. They don't give a reason for removal or even acknowledge the post?

Not one single word. Often the slightest thing triggers them. So subtle quite frankly I don't even know why they removed the thread, even before the first response comes in.

It's not like they pull down a thread with disagreements between forum members. Some removed are calm discussions. Lots of people are noticing, if they comment their response is removed but the thread is left alone. If two people comment back to back in mere milliseconds the thread is pulled.

That's what's so creepy, how fast they catch it and make it disappear. It almost feels violent. Never have I ever had such an experience

Have you seen some of the idiots, duplicate threads, and off-topic stuff there?
In their favor, there are tons of trolls camping in pretty much every thread.

On the other hand, it's also true that thread censorship is happening, as Zipred states. When it came out that OnePlus is a wholly owned subsidiary of Oppo and not merely a fledgling company with common investor(s) started by a handful of former Oppo employees, a few threads were started on their forum which the forum mods swiftly deleted, giving the impression that it was a dirty little secret they didn't want shared. Had they just come out and said it, who would care? It's a great phone! But the way they handled it, including the forum censorship, caused much of the angst.

Thing is the OnePlus forums are owned and controlled by the company, they can impose whatever rules and do anything they like I think, it's their property. Same thing in the official Apple forums, anything posted that Apple doesn't agree with or puts them in a bad light, tends to be deleted and censored.

OnePlus are from China, where we don't exactly have freedom of speech online or anywhere. Tend to get used to comments and posts mysteriously vanishing.

Strictly out of curiosity, how long did you stalk the Sony/Samsung/AT&T/Google/T-Mobile forums looking for unsettling activity before finally deciding to give them your business?

Since you have AT&T and they applied for a patent (https://www.google.com/patents/US20140010082) which would give them the ability to charge customers more money based on their type of bandwidth, did you stop using them? AT&T actually posted on their site that they are "for the open internet" 5 days after the patent publication date which effectually creates their own "closed internet."

As Mikedt pointed out, this is not the most uncommon thing.

To each their own.

I would view a manufacturer, carrier, or any other businesses own forum as nothing more than an extension of their marketing department. Even though they claim to be there for support, the marketing folks just can't let a negative comment, no matter how true, stand without intervening. Even those bugs, issues, or errors that have been resolved or fixed expeditiously or amicably. I'm honestly not at all surprised OnePlus is doing that.

That being said, we try to limit trashing other forums here at AF. It doesn't really add any value to the content here, and will certainly not make the target forum any better.

Tmobile regularly censors their forums, especially in the past when it has had to do with leaks about plan changes, phones, etc. Doesn't make waves here. so I'm not clear why it's so disturbing about OnePlus

It also can't be understated what the impact of unrefuted FUD (i.e. Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt) on a vendors' site could be. If 'joe disgruntled ex customer' says something unfounded or off the wall on a company's forum where versus a place like AF it carries different weight. That's probably why those types of forums are cleansed more than a place like this where we are all enthusiasts for a platform served by multiple vendors and developers.

My intent was no different than any of my other posts: to share my experience. If it came across otherwise I apologize.

i'm on those forums and the censor i see is for those who go totally out of their way to slander the product. some have even made multiple accounts after being banned just to come back and troll.

plus no one uses the search function and no sticky threads leads to tons of dupe threads.

Censorship happens on a lot of sites. I find it especially heavy on company owned forums, because they want to control the messages that are out there.

Yeh you're much more likely to find it on company owned forums, really because they usually don't want anything bad said about the company and/or their products on their own site. IANAL but even on independent forums such as AF, might still have to be careful about posts that could be considered defamation and libel though. And of course every forum has their own house rules that all members must obey, and anything is out of order is usually deleted or moderated.

You're absolutely right, I've never seen it so bad on any other of the several forums I participate in. There seems to be an extremely high volume of people who simply want to attack the product, the company, and vent anger rather loudly.

I would like to add something regarding the censorship. I wrote the following in response to one of the articles about the One invites written on Phandroid:

"The One Plus One had me pretty excited for the value prospect alone. Some of the photos from the initial demo unit had me very excited by the photo quality that would be coming from a phone, especially at its price level. I planned to wait until the phone was readily available since I was in no hurry to get a new phone and did not want to play games to "earn" a purchase.

There are a couple things that have changed my mind though. The reviews that have been coming out have less than stellar photo examples compared to the earlier demo units that forum members won to show off the photo capabilities of the phone. While I understand software could be an issue, I don't get why the later units tested by reviewers would have software that would make things worse.

Here is the real kicker, though, that instantly changed my mind about a taking a chance on this company and phone. I posted (or I should say tried to post) a simple post asking who on their forums was in the military. My post was instantly locked for review and was not unlocked. I was simply trying to allow those who serve on their forum to be acknowledged for their service. It was not meant to bring attention to myself but to all who serve. I absolutely will not support any company that allows its forum to be moderated in a way that disrespects the military. I do not care if the moderators are One Plus employees or not. One Plus heavily relies on the forum for their marketing and is the primary community that will be purchasing their product. Whether or not One Plus is financially associated with the forum or directly affiliated with the forum, actions such as this do not help portray a positive image of the company."

Since writing this, I noticed the moderators allowed another post that was asking whether or not military personnel should get the first invites. My post was simply asking if anyone was in the military. My post was not one to stir controversy or to ask for special treatment. It was nothing more than a question to see how many serve in the military. I "was" suggesting the OPO to others I know in the military. I will no longer be suggesting it to anyone. I respect a company's right to set their own rules and enforce them. I do not, however, respect a company that sets double standards as the standard. I understand this is not an American company. I have no problem supporting the global economy. Supporting other countries' products encourages people in other countries to support US products. Because of how this company's primary marketing tool (the forum) is allowed to operate, I will not be supporting this company by purchasing anything from them.

So you're upset that a company based in another country (one which isn't even a specific ally of our country) wasn't enthusiastic about a post which was totally off topic and asking for identification of military members?

I totally support our troops (in fact, I live with three Afghanistan vets and have held their room without charging rent while they were deployed), but it's asinine to think that your military status is at all relevant in a cell phone forum, particularly one that, as you mentioned, is meant to market their phone.

It isn't necessarily relevant. Neither are a majority of the subjects posted on that forum. Neither was the other military post (that was posted after I attempted to post and was not locked and had pages of responses) asking if military should have preferential treatment by getting an invite before anyone else. My post had no intentions what-so-ever. It was simply to acknowledge those who serve. And here is something that is key I have not mentioned. I never mentioned "American" military. I never mentioned where I was from and never have. I simply asked who currently serves. Very simple. It's an English speaking forum (those are part of the rules). My post did not alienate any country or culture. It was written in English and could have been responded to by ANYONE on the forums who serves in a military in any country.

I don't serve to get accolades. If anyone serves for that reason, I would question why they serve. I am no longer upset. I am moving on and have made my choice not to support the company.
