Yes, you're correct.

Sony issued a recall of laptop batteries a few years ago as did Lenovo since a good percentage of their T Series ThinkPads use Sony batteries. And that's just one example. Other battery manufacturers have experienced similar situations with Li-Ion batteries.
 
I can't get that article to load but what I read on a different site said they were replacing the phone and sending employees to personally get the defective phone. They were also covering medical costs, jeans and a new case I believe.
