OnePlus General Discussion

Now that the launch is done the madness has truly begun. I've been watching this project very closely since I'm a serious buyer. In no rush, I'd at least like to be able to buy one in the next month.

They have an invite system as most of you may be aware of and it's so incredibly disorganized despite claims to the contrary. They have certainly achieved their goal of generating buzz.

However they are exceedingly bad at communicating with the members of the forum they created.

What are your thoughts and or experiences?

They've certainly generated a lot of hype and buzz, which I'm sure was the intention, likely in the absence of a large advertising budget and international launch shindig. That buzz could soon evaporate as we move onto other things, like iPhone 6 or Note 4 or whatever. Give it a few weeks, and it's not generally available, we still have to smash phones, put up with a hostile, unfriendly and NSFW forum, wait for invites or whatever, I reckon most are just going to lose interest in it, and say "forget it!". I was seriously looking at the One myself, however I wanted a new phone now, didn't want to wait and be dicking around wishing for an invite, so in the end I went with an Oppo, purchased locally.

The PRC version of the One apparently comes with ColorOS as the default, with CM as a user option. ColorOS is Oppo's baby, and ColorOS on a OnePlus One, I think does make it extremely similar to the Oppo Find 7, which also comes with ColorOS.

Also as I originally thought, no China Mobile TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE version of the One. Which means it will have slow 2G EDGE service only when used with the most popular carrier in China. And won't be able to use it with China Telecom at all, because there's no CDMA/EV-DO version either.

I don't think their team is bad at communicating in their own forum. People want the answers to everything right now and they want their phones right now. No amount of communication is going to fix that.

How are you enjoying your new OPPO Find 7a?

It's very interesting actually, the hardware itself is beautiful and is everything I was expecting. Still in two minds about ColorOS though, it's certainly no problem to use and is very smooth and polished. Not too fussed about the skinning and colour scheme though, which is basically Oppo corporate light grey and green. But then that's only software and can be changed and customised. One thing I've noticed about ColorOS, is that the notification bar has been designed to appear more like iOS than Android.

Something people might find interesting, here's a video of the PRC version of the OnePlus One with the default ColorOS, instead of CM.

I didn't want to start a "TIPS & TRICKS" thread w/the following,but,wanted to share this w/those here:

Not sure if this is by design,or,what, but,I can get the alarm to go off while the phone is (presumably) powered down,by doing the following:

1) Set alarm for whatever time you desire.
2) Power down the phone.
3) Plug-in the phone for charging (BTW,I'm using an LG 1.8a plug & matching LG USB cord).
4) PROFIT,the alarm comes on & the phone is fully powered on.

Haven't tried the OEM 1+1 cord/plug,will do so momentarily & update w/findings.

EDIT:

Tried all combinations of LG/1+1 cords & wall plugs:

1) LG Cord & plug: Alarm goes off

2) 1+1 Cord & plug: Wakes the phone up from off when plugged-in.If charging overnight & want the phone to stay off, reverse steps 2&3 from above.

3) LG Cord & 1+1 plug: Phone stays asleep/off,as 99.9999999999999999% of ANDROID devices do.

4) 1+1 Cord & LG Plug: Alarm goes off

Another BTW:
If I reverse the order of steps #2 & #3,it doesn't work,phone stays off.

I was careful to not depress the power button while plugging-in,so,that possibility is ruled out.

YOUR MILEAGE WILL MOST LIKELY VARY,so,file this under BTW/WTH..... :p :D

My alarm of choice is Alarm Clock Xtreme (I have the pro version).

Cool,will try it out tonight.
Looks like the free & PRO versions are identical, less the ads in the PRO version.
It's only $2.00,but,I'm good w/the stock app.
Otherwise,I have no problems going PRO w/any app that I d/l & use on a regular basis from the Store, more than happy to support development.

Check back-in w/ya later tonight,work beckons.................

No repeat of the alarm waking up from the powered down state w/an aftermarket alarm app.
The phone stays powered down/off, just as every other phone normally does, regardless of LG/1+1 Plug-Cord combination.

OK,I charged the 1+1 & unplugged + powered down last night.
Alarm still set ,but, totally powered down & unplugged.

Three minutes before the alarm was set to go off,the phone booted itself up,boot screen & all ,just as when depressing the power button to turn on the phone,& the alarm went off.

I was able to repeat this several times today,w/sufficient time between attempts to ensure a seemingly complete shut-off/power down.

I did a bit of a search @ the mothership, the official OnePlus One forum & found that others have experienced the same w/the stock alarm app.

I didn't delve too deep into the search,as I had to go to work, but, the repeatability is enough for me.
Some call this a bug, but,I think it is one KICK-ASS feature, especially since there was virtuaslly ZERO battery drain overnight {5hrs}(reading 99% on boot, well within a reasonable +/- accuracy).

There is a lot of development already for this phone. Tons of option depending on your tastes.

Very true. This also applies to OPPO's Find 7 series. Besides the ever reliable and resource laden XDA, a quick Google search brings up more almost daily. Owners of either of these OPPO built phones have a plethora of choices. A modders dream, I know I'm sure enjoying the fun of sampling as many as I have time for.
