Only 16 and 32Gb

I can get by on 32GB, as I typically keep things like music on the 'net. Having said that, while I initially thought I'd go for the 5X, I think I'll be buying the 6P for the extra memory and faster processor.

I can't. Sorry, I've lived for 2.5 years with 32GB without expansion, and I'm in the game of constantly monitoring my free space. I've tried, it doesn't work for me.

I don't keep video on my phone (don't use it for video at all), and I use OTG for nandroids, but unless I also stop storing music on it then 32GB is insufficient. For my purposes (which include a lot of international travel) cloud storage is worthless. So sorry, but the 5X is ruled out for me (and the 6P is ruled out by size - actually for anything but a Nexus the 5X's size would be too large for me).

It's been quite typical of Google to underestimate people's storage requirements, so I'm not surprised. But I am disappointed, because only an idiot could believe that a choice of 16 or 32 would be adequate these days (and frankly it's hard to imagine how anyone would think 16 minus OS would be adequate these days). But Google do seem to have a lot of smart idiots (as an academic I see no contradiction between those two words).

Unfortunately, it seems all the Android device makers have decided (likely based on sales) that flagships must be larger than 5". Motorola seemed to be the last holdout, with the original Moto X, but have increased the screen size by half an inch with each new Moto X.

In this case, it seems like Google made the 6P the "flagship" phone, which like most newer flagships are around 5.5", and that the 5X is intended as a mid-range phone, with the typical memory size to go with a mid-range phone.

I've given up fighting the larger phones. While I still think they are a pain to carry comfortably, I'm getting old enough I have started appreciating the larger screen.

Uh...? Gigabytes to inches...

I'm guessing that was aimed at me. My point is that all the recently released flagships seem to be around 5.5" screen size or larger. It will be interesting to see what Samsung does with the new Galaxy, as well as the new HTC phone next month. And, if you want lots of storage, like 64GB internal storage or above, you have to buy a flagship phone.

Since the 5X seems to be designed as a mid-range or more "budget" phone, rather than the "flagship", it is relegated to having a maximum of 32GB internal storage.

I'm fine with 32GB but would have liked a 64GB option. I currently have 16GB free on mine Nexus 5. I carry my music on a dedicated audio player and on my tablet.

I agree that cloud storage is overrated though especially for us that commute sans cell coverage. I'm guessing we're the minority though.

Mine is a "high-end flagship", 5.1", and held to 32gb (S6)(the S6+=5.5"). I see your point. I think 32gb is plenty for me, but they should have made it expandable to be a true "super=phone".

It is why I said "recently released", with the S6 being 6 months old. Samsung may keep the S7 around the same size, since they have the Note and 6+ Edge devices as flagships, as well. Regardless, other than Apple, I'm not aware of any flagship device under 5" now.

Xperia Z5 Compact. Apart from screen resolution (which merely matches an iPhone) it's got flagship specs, but 4.6".

Sorry, typed late at night and badly phrased. I meant that only an idiot would think that it was adequate to provide those as the only (non-expandable) storage options, but left important words out!

I got you and I agree with you. It's all good!

Luckily for me, I have never used more than 9 gigs of space on any one of my previous phones. Digital hoarding is not my thing. I can't see the value of storing large amounts of videos/photos on my phone. And if I'm say a professional photographer I doubt I would have my portfolio on a phone. How many times am I actually going to access a movie that I need it on my phone? When I travel I pack all my media into my OTG thumb drive and RAV media/storage hub. Watch the movies once and then I'm done with them. I so rarely find myself lacking a signal for the cities in the U.S. I frequent and I don't use more than 1gig/week on the phone so streaming is not a big deal to me.

I was disappointed there wasn't a 64GB option as I'd have gone for it, had it been available. Having said that, coming from a 16GB N4, 32GB is still feeling kinda luxurious as I have well over double the free space.

Obviously, you can always use more storage so I totally understand where Hadron's coming from but it's not so much of an issue for me: while I have a few songs on my phone I mostly use it for podcasts and I could fit more than enough of those to outlast any trip on my last phone, never mind this one.

I've never been in the habit of watching video on phones coz the screen and battery are way too small. Since I always have a laptop on business trips, I have my downloaded video on there.

I have never needed more than 16 GB, if I take video with my phone, I just transfer it to my computer then delete it off the phone.
