recently completely abandoned ms office. anybody know of an open office app, where documents can be created & edited on a droidx?

Quick Office will not edit Open Office documents. Don't know about Documents to Go though.

Documents to go will not read open office documents either. You can re-save your open office documents in .doc format, if that's not too labor intensive. I am currently looking for something that will read open office formats as well, and I will let you know if I find one.
