Help OpenVPN leaking IP when tethering over WiFi

Hello all,

I am not completely sure this is the right forum to post such a question but hopefully someone can help me out.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6, rooted using the PingPong root app, on which I have installed both the OpenVPN and WiFi Tether Router apps after which I can use my laptop to tether to my 4G connection.

I have noticed however that the website www.speedtest.net seems to be able to get my true IP from my carrier.

Other websites do not do this, and return the IP from the VPN. Also if I go to the same website using my normal internet connection but connected through my VPN it seemingly cannot discern my true IP given by my ISP.

I have no idea why this would be happening. Is this a Flash leak of some sort? And more importantly, is there a way I can stop this happening?

Obviously it does not matter particularly that this website mentioned can detect my true IP and carrier but it makes me wonder what else OpenVPN could be leaking.

I'd say there's some kind of leak. If the VPN is complete and secure, any website should only be seeing the IP address of the VPN gateway server onto the open internet, and NOT your ISP or carrier.

Which particular "Open VPN" client are you using, because I see about 20 different apps going by that name. I'm always interested in VPNs myself, because I'm in China and like to look at Facebook and Youtube sometimes. :thumbsupdroid:

Thanks for your response - I am using OpenVPN Connect 1.1.16 (build 74) - this is from the apps "About" section, although to be honest I wasn't aware there there were any others. Now that you mention it though I do see another app, "OpenVPN for Android" in the Play store.

On my PC I use NordVPN's own software, and the same leak doesn't happen.
