Opera Mini is one of the most popular mobile web browsers out there and its making a valiant fight for supremacy, today launching Opera Mini 5 in beta form with a laundry list of new features. I'm really liking it. It's a little surprising since I did not care for the previous Opera offering. But, so far, this seems to be the best one available...until Firefox mobile comes out (I forget the silly name they're using...starts with a F...). I'll very likely use it then because of extension support and the massive extensions that will be available.

Only problem i really see with Opera is it can't be used as the default browser. If I'm using a twitter client and want to go to a web link, I'd like to have the choice of which browser to use. for web link stuff, i just want a quick look at the site, opera would work well for that.

Pinch and zoom would be nice, but tap to zoom isn't bad either as it normally reformats the text in articles.

kinetic scrolling isn't too bad but i see the point when you want to just go down a long page quicker.

The negative parts aside, the speed is blistering fast, like web browsing on steroids.

Over all a good beta, hopefully updates will make this a true contender.

Ok well after trying it again and making some adjustments (small fonts / high quality images on / fullscreen on) it seems to look better but no zoom controls is annoying and it does have some rendering issues. I'll wait for a few more revisions before seriously considering it. Also I prefer the complete full screen like dolphin and xscope offer, after all the screen is cramped as is. Not a bad debut but it still needs some work imo.
