What would you guys say the better phone to pick up on AT&T is? Can't decide between the two. Things I do most with my phone is media consumption like movies and music.

Obviously the Optimus G. However the LG Nexus 4 is much better.

One X+. I'd not touch LG unless it was a Nexus. LG software is crap. They have all that power under the hood yet fail to impress when compared to an SIII (no substantial difference) in performance. Which means the software isn't taking advantage of all its power.
I could say that Sense 4 on the HTC One X+ is even worse than the LG.
The Verge has commented that Sense 4 completely destroys the Android 4.1 user experience because of bloatware, bugs and lag.
But many like it very much. That's the problem, people's reactions to these manufacturer customisations differ. I've no interest in Sense myself btw, just noting.
I also read from members here that updates have improved Sense 4 a lot. That's one problem with review sites: they get the first release of a phone and most never update their reviews, so information can be out of date. Techradar.com are an exception, as they do often update reviews of devices when new software is released.

One thing I can say about LG, is that they are the slowest to give out updates. It took them a year to release 2.3.6 for the Optimus 2X, and there haven't been any signs of them making faster updates.
As far as Sense, (1) I would not accuse it of bloatware simply because its the carriers who put bloatware on it, not HTC. As I am not in the US, I have access to non-carrier modified phones and I can say, there really aren't much bloatware on manufacturer skinned devices apart from manufacturer made apps, which is part of their UI anyway. (2) Won't comment on bugs, but playing around on HTC phones my friends own (one of them has a One X), can't see any lag. I just prefer Samsung's overall UI since I'm more used to it and it seems "lighter" with less blingy animations. The only thing I want from HTC is the weather/clock widget. LOL.

Well here are the benchmarks from GSMArena tests:

And from this we can gather:
In pure all around performance benchmarks the Note 2 with its quad core A9's actually trashes the LG's quad A15's in performance in every test except one (Quadrant). The Linpack multithreaded test showed the A15's power, but only in that test was the different significant.
An offscreen test however actually did show the chip's mettle better, outscoring opponents as it should, but really, no one uses the phone's processor in real life offscreen OS usage.
And surprisingly, the slowest in internet browsing among all phones tested (iPhone 5, Note 2, SIII, One X and Meizu 4) was the Optimus G. LOL.
In conclusion? The phone has all the raw power it needs, the LG software just does not optimize it as well as Samsung's TouchWiz made better use of the Exynos chip's capabilities. I'd say, buy an Optimus G only if you plan on replacing the ROM immediately with a CM ROM. Otherwise, an SIII or Note II is more bang for buck: better camera, better OS support, better features.

I have been scraping the internet for this particular comparison for a while now. Everywhere I find a comparison between the Optimus G and the One X+, people soon switch to comparing the software - the custom software skin LG and HTC have on these phones, respectively.
However, it is important to note though, that many of us actually end up using custom ROMs, such as Cyanogenmod, on our phones anyway. Sure, the ROMs may not be out yet because both phones are just released, but when they are, I am sure many of us will ditch the manufacturer skins. For quicker updates, if not for anything else.
So, I guess what I am trying to say is, it would be great if we can keep the hardware and software comparisons as separate as possible, so that everybody benefits.

Battery life are actually very much tied to software. This is obvious when you count how many of HTC's updates claim better battery life. Some of them actually do have a big noticeable change.
