Otterbox defender or commuter?

I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S3 but I'm not sure whether to get an otterbox defender or commuter? or something else. I have not experiences with high end android phones so I don't know what protection i need. i do not have any rugged hobbies but i tend to drop my phone. also is a screen protector necessary or should i opt for just a flip case?

I don't own a GS3 but have owned OtterBoxes and have nothing but good things to say about them if you don't mind the extra bulk. Protection is outstanding.

You might consider browsing the Samsung Galaxy S3 Forum for your answer.

Also, I could move this thread there for you if you would like, you might get a better response from GS3 owners than the general Android population as people's favorite cases do differ from phone to phone.

Agree with Geek. I had the Commuter for my Bionic and imagine it's a similar build for the S3. Biggest differences are:
-Commuter has a slick back with a silicone interior. Very slick actually, I didn't care for it.
-Defender is all rubber/silicone and has a built in screen protector which gives it some help with moisture/water.
-Commuter has a slimmer profile, but not much more than the Defender.
-Both have covers for all ports to defend against dust/water.

If you tend to drop your phone quite a bit, I'd highly recommend the Defender. I know a lot of folks who have one (mainly those with iPhones and/or kids).
Here's a massive thread to go through if you want some with actual cases for advice:

My brand new replacement Defender case just arrived today for my Galaxy Note. The screen cover got scratched after lots of abuse from keys in my pockets. So they sent me an entirely new replacement case. I also drop my phone at least once a week. Even trust the case enough to drop my $500 phone (no insurance mind you) from six feet demonstrating to others my faith in the product. There is nothing more rugged and dependable then Otterbox Defender on the market PERIOD imho.

If you go with the defender you wont even have to pay your carrier for protection ever again. In just six months the case more then paid for itself and with the replacement it should get me two years of protection for less then a single repair deductible. You never know if accidents will happen even if you never dropped your device before. The only downside is the added bulk can be annoying at first but you should get used to it fairly quickly.

I ended up getting the commuter just because I'm not too hard on my phone, just the occasional drops here and there.
