I'm new here. Forgive me please if this kind of post is in the wrong section.

First, I love this forum. Been checking it out lately. So I figure all the experts are here. :)

My situation?

The short story is this: my wife has been eligible for an upgrade for maybe a year (I know). Me? I'm up in mid-January. My son is up in May.

I am dreaming about a smartphone.

And I'm not allowed to talk about it anymore unless I rub my wife's back while boring her to tears. For some darn reason, I just can't stop getting excited about finally being "that guy" with the ability to do anything those suckers can do.

Anyhow, we're not exactly rich, but I want to stick with Verizon. Mostly because of the HTC Mecha...

...Sorry. I was just smiling into space for a few minutes. But then I was rudely reminded I have an LG Chocolate 3 when it rang a sec ago. It ain't no Mecha...(no matter how many times I try to touch the screen and zoom).

So...

We might have to go with Sprint if we can't get that Verizon promo that ends January seventh. I'd rather not however.

What are the odds that Verizon will "negotiate" a deal if I "threaten" (bluff) to leave them?

In your experience with people here will they try to keep us? Especially since we're not tied into a contract (except my son's) at that point?

Do I have to ask to cancel?

Or... will they say, "go ahead" because they're so huge it won't make a difference whereas Sprint would try harder to keep us if we were their customers?

Thanks for your input and patience with my rambling post.

Off to go see if my LG Chocolate screen will rotate if I turn it horizontal.

Nope.

Those are good questions, Wantin.

The short answer, from an opinion standpoint, not one of factual data or from knowing Verizon policy "fine print," is that kindly explaining your situation and asking for what you want, directly, can yield good results.

I would never threaten to leave (if under contract it is a hollow threat anyway ;)), but I would mention that this or that other carrier has a better deal for me (that could also back fire with some reps).

I have seen reported here success from another tactic: trying more than one Verizon store, presuming there is more than one near you. Just explain the whole thing to different reps, you may find one more flexible than the others.

Good luck.

If the in-store folks can't hook you up with what you want call Customer Service. They seem to have more leeway sometimes. Of course, if you do end up going through CS you will have to get your phones online/through them, not the store so be sure to play with them all and know what you want.
They (CS) may also be able to play with your upgrade date...if it's only a matter of a few days/weeks. Sometimes they will, other times not so much. It really does depend on who you get on the phone (or in the store).

Thanks guys...that's kind of what I thought.

As it turns out, they had a promo in the paper yesterday for the family share plan

is your contract up jan 23rd? or is your upgrade jan 23rd?
if its your contract then you should be able to upgrade now
its at month 20 iirc, of a 24month contract
primary lines usually get one at 12months, but no NE2 money at that point

That's a very good question. My wife's upgrade was last May.

My upgrade is January 23rd. I thought that and the contract was the same thing. She has the primary line.

So...

I better check on that.

they are not the same thing
mine and my wifes are, as i upgrade them the same day all the time.

but i had the option at 12 months for an early upgrade
my contract was in march, but my upgrade on both lines was in november.

you can check in on verizon website, or call customer service

Well...shows you what I know.

We're up for contract renewal in May. They can give us the promotion now however since I'm so close, BUT I gotta wait for those new phones in '11.

:)

Yeah, that's another reason I called. They'd give it to us—the promo was advertised in the paper now.

Never mind. It looks like text for us would still be extra.

Do you happen to know? Will 4G phones be extra (other than the "$30" plan)?

I seem to remember it will be like Sprint where they're an extra $10 a month regardless of 4G coverage.

i dont think they have announced 4g phone priceing yet

The only hints about any kind of 4G pricing from Verizon have been the Mobile Broadband plans.

With 3G modems, you pay 39.99 for 250mb, or 59.99 for 5gb.
With 4G modems, you pay 50.00 for 5gb, or 80.00 for 10gb.

My experience with Verizon is that they won't move the upgrade dates anymore. My daughter had a phone on it's last legs and I wanted to upgrade her one week early and they wouldn't let me do it. I went to 3 stores and called customer service twice and also customer retention. Seems that they are really cracking down.
I debated on waiting til February to upgrade my line but the $10 smartphone talk free promotion was too good of a deal for me to pass up so I went ahead and got a phone now. We can always do another annual upgrade next year.

They told me yesterday that they could upgrade me "early" as it's about 5-6 weeks away.

I opted not to. One, can't afford it yet. Two, I want to go with one of the newer phones as well.

Oh to be rich. :)

Nope, just about the only time you can get an upgrade date moved anymore is if there was an error in the account. Something like starting a line with your own equipment and the rep at that time put a 2 year contract on the line as if it were a new phone purchase. Things like that will get an upgrade date moved. I've occasionally had luck in the past getting an upgrade date changed for long term customers (5+years) with spotless payment histories who are in the store wanting to get a new phone and their upgrade date was less than 30 days in the future. But that doesn't happen often.
