outlook is continously syncing in background

We have a Droid phone at worked set up to sync with our Outlook Exchange Server. It works great. I had it set to sync automatically. This worked well for a few months. Now the phone is syncing continuously in the background and running the battery down in a matter of hours. I have tried changing the sync mode to every 5 minutes but that has not helped. We are using Outlook 2007.
Any suggestions or ideas? This is the owners phone and would like it fixed soon.
