Overcome Device Protection for legitimate user

Hi,

Hoping someone can help.

Purchased a new HTC 10 from Telstra 2 years ago (it has their firmware).

1 year ago I loaned the phone to a friend, and removed my device access from Google.

Friend has now returned the device, but they had enabled Device Protection with their account and did not remove it. They do not remember their password, and are not the slightest bit interested in helping me.

None of the published workarounds appear to work, and the device is still getting updates from the latest published Telstra patches - which seems very secure!

Does anyone have suggestions on how I may resolve this? I am in Vietnam currently so have no easy access to Telstra or Australian support resources.

Thanks,
Paul

I have to agree, your alleged friend should either 'remember' their password so you can reset the phone or he/she owes you some sort of compensation to replace it.
If the device protection was just something easy to bypass/reset, it wouldn't have any purpose.
