Hi,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. Recently I have noticed the CPU running at 99% quite frequently. This caused the CPU to heat up to at times higher than 75 degrees Celsius and battery to drain ridiculously fast! I have read around and heard this was a memory card fault because IndexService was trying to index files on my SD card. I removed the SD card and this seemed to work. I took folders off the SD card 1 at a time to find the culprit but in the end, even the blank SD card caused IndexService to run at such a high rate.

I have taken the SD card out again and, after force stopping IndexService, my phone seemed fine. This was yesterday. Today it is back to square one. There is no SD card now. What is the problem? CPU runs between 90-99% when IndexService is running. As soon as I force stop it, it returns to normal levels. The IndexService then seems to start itself up automatically and randomly. It might be after 5 mins, it might be after an hour.

Thanks in advance

Is there a way to remove IndexService? Or have it permanently shut off unless you turn it on?

You would have to root the phone, then you could either freeze the indexing app with Titanium Backup or stop it from running with Disable Service. I don't know if doing so would break anything though, some system apps will cause problems if you disable them. You definitely don't want to uninstall it in case this happens, freezing accomplishes the same thing and is reversible.
