Help Overheating when not connected to Wi-Fi?

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and also new to Samsung smartphones... Here's the thing:
My GTI5800L (not sure what the L stands for) overheats when wi-fi connection is out of range (3G or H icon showing on display), and battery wears out really quick!
On the other hand, when connected to wi-fi at home or anywhere else, the phone cools down and works perfectly fine. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Thank you all,

Hi,
A few thoughts.
is the screen on max brightness? mine shuts down using the gps in the car as it gets VERY hot (plus I leave it connected to the lighter socket), turning down screen brightness has fixed this now.

From what I understand, if the phone, wifi or 3G signal is weak, the phone uses more power to search for a good signal and not much you can do about that.

It might be worth checking out if any apps are active as well, as the cpu and ram could be working harder; and generating more heat.

hope this might help

Mine does get warm also, but that is normally down to torrent download over the 3G network, it's cool we can download direct to phone with this app to phone via WIFI or 3G.

Be a nicer little heater in winter, lol
