I want to root my phone. But I just can't get any solid information out of google. There are so many methods and vary depending on everything and I have no way of telling which site is legit and which is just trying to get their malware onto my phone. I honestly don't even know where to ask for advice on this.

If you just want to root your Axon 7 (without installing a custom ROM) this guide appears to be pretty straightforward (note it applies only to the U.S. version - A2017U and that it's based pretty much on the same XDA Developers write-up @lunatic59 posted) :
