People app and sorting of addresses

Hi, I have an htc desire with android 2.2. I have all my contacts on my sim, from my previous Sony phone. When I view them now in people they make no sense, are in no order and are a nightmare to try and use. Does anyone know what I can do to be Abel to view them as First name, Last name, number? I emailed htc but they have been no help, it's a real pain.
