maybe its because 8 out of 10 people are pessimists.

I guess it makes sense: if you're an optimist, you're going to be more likely to take risks (dangerous activities, unhealthy life style choices) and consequently, you're more likely to be killed by them.

Also explains why the old tend to be right wing. Apparently right wing people are more fearful and pessimistic, so they're going to live longer.
